I just received my Volant #19640 today for the 4.0 Sohc ranger/explorer. It came with very basic instructions and did not come with a hole for the temperature sensor. I know on the K&N unit you have to drill your own, also I have parts that I don't need like vacum hoses, plastic elbows, vac line caps etc.

Does anybody have any detailed description of the installation? I ran a search but turned up nothing. I am planning on photographing my install though.

it was pretty easy when i did it, didn't have to drill anything though the kit was missing one of the connectors so i had to use the stock tubing, put up a pic and i might be able to help...
oh as well the airbox is a really tight fit, u have to put it in first

 I know what you mean my kit did not come with one of the larger Stainless hose clamps instead they sent three smaller ones. Also there is no instruction for people with the Temperature Sensor, had to bum it off the K&N site and I still need to find a rubber grommet... Man, after waiting so long for this thing its turned out to be a drag.

well it sounds great and if u swisscheese it (i havn't yet) it supposedly sounds better...
u don't need the large clamp u can do it with the small one, i meant i was missing one of the rubber connector tubes. whats this temp sensor?

cut/drill lots of holes in the box, even more air is allowed in

you have to be joking...
why would you cut up the most expensive intake kit?
it's supposed to be a closed box ! ! !
it's the only true cold air intake they make for explorers, it's sealed up for that reason.

its actually not a cold air intake, you need to buy the extension to make it a real CAI or make ur own extension aka snorkle

Tilt do they sell and extension for this kit? I have seen it for the dodge trucks but not the ford one??

With all do respect I would never swiss cheese this airbox not for what I paid. Why not just buy a K&N unit if you want an open kit?? I swiss cheesed my factory box, I call it a Ghetto intake, because it is a cheap way to upgrade a bit- love the sound though.

I guess the temp sensor is unique to the 98' sohc. Sensor that mounts in the intake tube.

Cheers-

i don't think they sell the extension so i've been thinking of making my own...

Volants are great, but they are also a great PITA. The one I have for my OHV was a motherhumper to put in, and I still had to getto-rig one of the lines. Oh well.

It took me two hours and lots of leg work to install mine. Its finaly in and I really dig the added power and throttle response, volants are excellent because the air tubes are smooth and coated with a slippery plastic material and is beneficial to air flow.

I can't wait to wire up that exhaust.

pita....?

If anyone does create a large inlet path to the air cleaner, please post about it here. Thanks,

My evaluation on the Volant is complete. It is about 5x better than the swiss cheese stock box method with K&N that I ran for about 2 months. For some reason that seemed to bog on me?? The Volant is nice and Throaty at anything more than half throttle, above that it is nice and quite.

At full throttle it pulls much harder, not just throttle response but more power, much more. I would say I gained between 8-10hp at the wheels. My engine is in supreme condition and I do have 4.10 gearing. The throttle response is excellent as well.

As for the gas milage? Well I was getting about 16.2 mpg when driving nicely but with the added power I put that milage in the weeds. I went through a 1/2 tank in about 120 miles.

Love the pull when I stomp it though, reminds me of my old '91 5.0 Stang.

In the fender where the old airbox bolted up are two holes. I am thinking of cutting out these holes and running a square 3x4 gutter drain hose under the truck, up to this hole which lines up to one of the inlets in the Volant. I want to find some type of scoop to mount under the fender that will collect air better. Maybe volant makes one. I know Year One makes scoops for the 1970 old's W-30 and they have them for sale. Also March makes a ram air kit for the mustang, maybe you could just buy the scoop- it connects to a 3" hose.

you actually get cold air as opposed to engine air

Just a suggestion .......... before you go to all the work involved, take an OBD II scanner and moniter IAT at various speeds above 30 MPH.

You will find that at these speeds the intake air temperature is within a few degrees ( F ) of ambient temperature.
