Wanting 35s, but not sure what gear my car has.

I've got an otherwise stock 95 XLT 4wd, what gearing does my truck have right now? And how hard/ expensive is it to change the gearing?

Mo matter the gearing your truck has now, you will not be able to run 35's until you regear to a minimum of 4.10 gears. Really, 4.56 or 4.88 is better though. It is a very hard job to do yourself and is time consumning. It is also expensive to do at a shop at around 200-400 to do the rear and 300-500 to do the front. And that is labor only.

On the driverside door there should be a tag and on it it should say axle somewhere and there will be a code below it, that will tell you what ratio gears you have. i have 35s with 4.10s right now and the truck is a dog, i cant wait to regear to 4.88s.

dude, i am running 32s with 3.27s....and i will be running 33s with it shortly, whether you have the 3.55s or 3.73s, you should have no prob...just expect your mpg and pickup to drop. if you want to be nice to your tranny, go to 4.56s....same price as 4.10s, still dont have to mod the pin like you would on 4.88+ and you will be prepared for bigger tires later.

do you mean 3:73's if so i have them with 33's and its fine. but a little sluggish on highways. if you have the money to regear i would to 4:56's

I meant 3.55s, my car is due in for service soon, do you think I could get them to put in 4.10s for not a crazy amount of money?

no it costs alot quick estimate is about 300 to 400 per rear without the part. i wouldnt go with 4:10's if you do it go with 4:56 you will be much happier if your running 33's even if your running 32's you might always go bigger.

if you have no experience or little dont try. i dont know much about it but experience here says dont. also i know if you dont set the gears up right they will wear really quick.

agreed, some things are better to have a pro do....looking at 600+ for install on coth axles, plus gears (figure 300 ish). might as well throw a locker or LS while you are in there, since i doubt you have one now (another 250-700, depending on type/brand). my gear budget is 1300, and that is low end. like i said before, if you are going to regear, go to 4.56..it will be the same cost as 4.10 but you wont regret it later. think about it this way, newer models were avail with 4.10 stock...if you are going to regear, why go with a stock size.

i had the opreitunity to get 3.73s with a ls for 50 bucks and i passed it up because i knew i would be paying a buttload to have them put in just to redo it all later, might as well do it right the first time.

well i just read your original post agsin and to run 35's you will need to change alot more to do it right. 33" will work with 3:55's but expect to lose mpg and hp on the highway. try it you can always go down to 32's

thats the same problem i had. one step at a time man, one step at a time. it took me 7 mos to save the $$ for my moonroof, so it will be well over a year before i regear. when i get the $$ for one set of gears, i'll get them. then the other, then the ls...then finally the install. its a snowball. the best part s, by the time i finish with the lift i want and the new gears, it will be solid axle time and atlas II time! (about 4 years from now)
