WAR153 Shackles

Okay. It confounds me that only the outside portions carry the whole burden, but I'll replace mine when I install my add-a-leafs and Edelbrocks next weekend.

I do believe I will go with metric though which is what mine seems to be. I assume .545 is 14mm.

I replaced mine with a normal bolt that doesn't have the taper. For all four bolts, washers and nuts was $10 from my local spring shop.

Dims...

Here are the dim's for the bolt dia's.
1/2"= .5000
9/16"= .5625
14mm = .5512
The 14mm is the equivalent replacement to the factory shackle bolt on my 1991 Explorer XLT 4WD.
I was gonna get the 14mm's and use the factory lock nuts...
But, at my local hardware store, the 14mm x 120mm bolts were almost five bucks each!! The 9/16"x 5" gr5 were about a buck fifty each. I went for the 9/16" bolts. About a week later WP sent me 14mm bolts.
Or if you have a certain affinity to your 1/2" bolts, I'm sure there is some kinda mathematical formula for how many wraps of duct tape will effectively convert a 1/2" bolt to 9/16" dia. ;)

Hey wabbit how did you get warrior to send you the right size bolts. Getting new bolts from them would be better than going out and buying them.

WP

I'm not sure how wabbit got the bolts, but when I talked to the Warrior rep, he was awsome. He was aware of the problem, and I'm sure you all know, the new shackles are coming with the 9/16" bolt and larger holes in the shackle. Just look up their number and call them. Who know, maybe they'll just send you out the new set with the holes already drilled. WP is a great company, ask, the worst that could happen is they say no. Too bad that make so much JEEP stuff and not more Explorer stuff. For me, I couldn't wait to get the shackles on, so I jsut went and got the bolts. I had one of my new bushings with me, and one of the 1/2" bolts. I just found one that looked exaclty like it, but fit snug int he bushing. It was 9/16.

Glad I could at least serve as a bad example...

First, jgriffin, I E'd WP about it when I first got my shackles (see prior post).
Second, Gerald,(heavy sigh..), by all means you go ahead and do the right thing. For me the right thing equated to saving $3.50 x 4, uuhhh ...$14 bucks!! Oh, minus the cost of the nuts x4= $2, so $12 bucks. The difference between 14mm and 9/16" is .0113" which rounds to "one one hundredth of an inch". This is a hair that does not need splitting, so to speak, in a non-machined slip fit application.
As far as hardness grading, I would suppose very few bolts on any vehicle are more than gr5. Even though metric fasteners are graded on a different scale, I'm not sure they are harder, or better.
I didn't think to ask the guy at the hardware store but maybe the $5 14mm ones are self-installing or glow in the dark or ???
Now that would be sumptin'!!

U DA MAN

Wabbit, you mean to tell me that when I emailed you for the bolt size...you gave me one that was a 100th of an inch off? What the heck. Hey, if my tires suddenly emplode, it's your fault. You the man, wabbit. If we go on a night run soon, I'm gonna follow you....those glow in the dark bolts will keep me from getting lost.

I got the plain 'ol 9/16" uns, not them newfangled metric "GITD"doohickies.

The $12 bucks I saved was just enough to pay for my extra fancy hockey puck body lift(I painted my pucks blue, hence, "extra fancy").

blue?

Hey, do those hockey pucks glow in the dark too? You are going to have one heck of a nice "vegas" wanna be.

It is a very nice sky blue...

I like to call it Ford Blue but really, Ford Blue is not available in the 78 cents per can variety spray paint. But to me, deep in my heart, it is Ford Blue.
And I would appreciate that anyone who spends any amount of time under my Explorer, whether it is moving or not, should be so kind as to notice my efforts to make my undercarriage more scenic and pleasing to the eye. It is well known that the color blue has a calming effect which may prove beneficial to anyone viewing my undercarriage while the Explorer is in motion.

Viewing your undercarriage is easier when it's pointing up but I guess that would be a bad plan.... :D

And, seriously, thanks for helping clear up all this bolt stuff. I will in fact be replacing mine this weekend.

Alright folks, just thought I'd post this in case some of you get the same idea. The following is my inquiry and response from Warrior Products.

INQUIRY:

I am interested in purchasing a pair of shackles for my 1996 Ford Explorer XLT, 4x4 (WAR153/WAR353). I understand there has been some concern regarding the proper bolt size for this kit. Apparently some folks have been receiving 1/2" bolts which I understand work, but are loose fitting. I've read that the correct bolt size should be either 14mm or 9/16". My question is can I order the Explorer shackles (WAR353) with the 9/16" x 4 1/2" greasable bolts/sleeves (WAR90308) which have a sleeve size of 3/4" x 0.093" x 3.00" for 9/16" bolts?

RESPONSE:

Thanks for your inquiry. While we do not make a shackle kit that combines parts as you have described, you can buy the two part numbers you mentioned to accomplish the same thing. As the non-greasable bolts in the regular shackle kit add little to the cost there would be little additional cost to you by doing it this way. The 14mm bolts have been unavailable and the 9/16" bolts fit very tight. To use the larger bolts you would have to drill out the bolt holes in the shackles. The 1/2" bolts we provide are somewhat loose in the bushings but this has not caused problems as the minimal possible movement is minimized further by the weight of the vehicle holding the parts in place. We have been doing some additional research based on your email and may be able to manufacture a greasable bolt in the 14mm size. We are actively pursuing a change in our shackle to make the 14mm bolt standard. It should be available very soon. Thanks for taking the time to contact us. Hope this information helps.

Excellent response... Kudos to WP!!

It's nice to see progress in motion.

Wabbit,
I just got back from buying the bolts. I found 14x130mm in 8.8 grade, basically equal to grade 5, for $1.87 each! I guess sometimes it's an advantage living in a huge city. They are going on this weekend.

Ya know...

...every couple of months my shackles loosen up and start making a racket when I go around turns and stuff. All I do is loosen then tighten the bolts back up and its good for awhile. But, after seeing this exhausting discussion on it, I think a trip to the hardware store is in order...Thanks everyone.Dead Link Removed

Great deal on the bolts!!!

And you should be able to use the factory lock nuts too.
Bob, make sure to get lock nuts for your bolts. Either Nylock or deformed ones should do. Also, I like your observation about this "exhausting" discussion.. :) Not that I'm exhausted but Imathinkin' the issue is... :)
BTW: Anybody know if I can fit 31's on my stocker???
