I'll make it quick...

Should I go with a Motorcraft water pump for $$$ or can anyone advise what aftermarket pumps are worthy. Any specific manufacturers that work well with Ford Explorers? Any to definitely stay away from?

While I got the pump off, I'm replacing the belt as well.... anything else that should be swapped out while I'm there?

Thanks for any comments...

I recently changed out my radiator (spectra) along with my water pump. Both purchased from NAPA. Never heard anything bad about any after market water pumps. My truck has 145xxx on it. I'm changing out my thermostat with either a dormain or Motorcraft part soon.

I'd go with a Motorcraft if you can. Providing you keep the thermostat housing, engine block, and radiator clean, it should last you another 100,000 + miles. Ford put out a TSB regarding the water pump and using fresh coolant and flushes to keep the bearings working well and free of contaminents.

I've used the motorcraft gold coolant for the first 95,000 miles and then switched to Amsoil antifreeze when I changed the radiator and thermostat housing (I bought the aluminum one from the dude on this forum... GREAT PRODUCT! I feel better knowing it's changed for good). I think the Amsoil coolant will offer better protection in the long run with the "sealant" properties added in. We'll see...

I believe the Gates pumps work well with Ford Explorers..... Napa sells pumps as well and I believe they are made by Gates and stamped with Napa.... also a longer warranty through Napa, but you pay for it through the higher Napa price.

good luck
