ok.. so i go to the junkyard looking for a replacement mirror for my x... and i found a rolled explorer with a v8 in it.. i just smile a bit cuz i found my mirror mount..

anyway..

the guy said he cant part it out to me due to some insurance thing.. but soon he will technically own it, and i could buy the whole thing for 1000 bucks.. the frame is RUINED.. the truck isnt worth a dime.. but it's engine and stuff is still pretty darn nice.. it turned over.. ran nicely.. but the truck is smashed to pieces...

so i ask..

is this a good swap for me? i mean, i dont mind footing the labor bill.. but is this a good v8 swap? will it still have the selectable 4 wheel like my truck does now, or will i have to do all wheel.. i read a bit about this.. but im still pretty confused.. would this 5.0 have parts for it just like a 5.0 for a mustang? or would it be different?

just curious... i realized today i got my truck for 700 dollars...

whats 3 thousand into making this thing a big bad truck?

so whats the verdict.. is this a highly mod'able engine? should i go for it? how will the 4 wheel work?

The only option you have for putting a drop in V8 in your explorer would be AWD or 2WD. The V8 tranny (4R70W) is not compatible with your current Transfer case. Just like the 5.0L V8 is not compatible with your V6 Transmission.

You would have to do a total engine wiring change, exhaust, mounts, etc.......possibly drivelines........
THe explorer (96+) V8 motor is nothing like a 89-95 Stang motor. It has a short front ACC kit, Coil packs instead of a distributor, Gt-40 heads/intake, etc, etc.

Good Luck
Al

so... id be better off getting an old v8 from a mustang, an AOD tranny *(correct me here if im wrong)* and what type of transfer case? and what computer would i use to wire this whole thing up?

id like to keep the air conditioning too.. is that still fesable?

like i said before.. this truck was 700 dollars. its definately worth the money to make it what i want.

If it were me, I'd buy the totaled X pull the entire drive train, sell off any parts that are salvegable (ie. interior, wheels, rear diff, etc....) keep the engine, radiator, A/C parts, wireing, computer and drive lines. Sell the 4R70W tranny & t-case, and use the money to buy an AOD and t-case adapter. Then install everything into your X. The reason I feel this is the best route, is you know everything will fit, you will have everything you need to install the engine, there will be no hidded costs such as finding pulleys, motor mounts, fuel lines, etc... you will have access to anything you might need.

Please answer me this....you bought your 96' for $700??? Or are you talkin about the junkyard X??
If so, how and where did you find a 96' for $700???

yes i bought my truck for 700 dollars. yes its limited.. it had a brand new engine with about 3000 miles, and was in the shop getting a new tranny when i bought it. now its got about 2000 miles from me.

it has every option accept for the sunroof.

i know how to get deals!

What I would do personally is buy the whole truck, and put the engine and tranny in your explorer. The 4R70W is geared alot better than the AOD anyway. And yes, your current transfercase IS compatible with the V8 tranny. You may want to contact Stadx2, he has put a 4405 transfercase behind his v8 tranny.

Woah nelly, yes it will fit, you can put the 4405 T-Case behind the 4R70W, BUT, you do have to buy an adaptor from advanced adaptors for around $500-600... Just an FYI, and I do believe a write up is coming from Darren (StadX2) very soon.
