I have a 2006 Explorer XLT with about 85,000 miles on it(original battery). When i tried to start it this morning there was nothing, completely dead, not turing over, nothing. I did however hear some electrical clicking coming from what seemed to be under the steering wheel.

I let it sit in the garage for a few hours, when I came back to try to start it again that same clicking noise occurred and also when i tried to start the car I heard a clicking noise coming from the fuse box area.

I received a jump from my wife, It drove fine and the clicking noise went away. A few hours after sitting in the driveway it is now dead again making the clicking noise again.

I am wondering if anyone has run into this problem before or has any ideas on what is wrong. I don't want to go buy a new battery, and have the new battery die overnight. Thank you in advance for any information.

would look into your click first, it is a relay clicking if if is coming from the fuse box. take off the cover and put a figure on one of the fuses, and crank it, you should be able to feel which one is clicking, if your not sure which one it is, don't be affraid to pull out relay, i suggest you do it one at a time and put them back befor pulling the next one. if you find out what relay is clicking it can help diag this problem, oh and welcome to the forum

My battery was wasted by 50,000 miles on my '06. if you hear the clicking before you turn the key search for it. If you hear the clicking after you turn the key don't waste your time and just replace the battery.

The clicking is being caused by your faulty battery. When voltage in the system gets low it makes the fuses/relays confused and you hear the relays cycling on and off. I would put a battery in it and I bet your problem is gone.

Sounds like the battery to me. My battery shorted out in my '06 at about 50k miles.

i hate what mechanics are coming to, so many are just "parts replacers"
