I've been getting a progressive clunking from the front of my 97 AWD X for the past month or so. I've since found one of the problems which turned out to be a loose bolt & nut on the (rear attachment) of the upper driverside control arm. Now that this is tightened properly, I've ruled out the reason I had steering issues on acceleration and braking (ie. pulls to left on decel and pulls to right on accel). For the current problem, I get a clunking noise when you put a load on the vehicle. It doesn't do it while you turn, but rather in straight line (usually from a stop). The noise may occur once or several times. It sounds like metal on metal as if someone was beating on your floor board w/ a ball-peen hammer. The noise appears to be coming from the driverside. I've jacked the car up and tested the halfshaft/CV shaft and there doesn't appear or feel to be any issues. Could the driveshaft be popping/skipping while under a load? Any other ideas or suggestions to point me in the right direction would be appreciated. I hate to throw money at a vehicle to fix it . On a side note, my gas mileage has gotten better due to this handicap. Now it's up to ~18mpg around town.
