WELL!!! I BLEW-UP THE TRANNY TODAY!!!!!

so, i am taking it in tomorrow to get the full treatment done. i had planned on doing this eventually, just not this soon...it will be nice when i get it done, just didn't need to spent the money right now. it will be rebuilt by a place that specializes in performance transmissions and will also have a 2000-2200 stall in it. they are said they can rebuild my stall convertor and upgrade it in the process. i will have more info when i go in to talk to them in the morning about it...

Wow! that is quite a feat to be able to blow up a 4R70W tranny with anything less than 450 rwhp. Unless it is really old.

it had 84,000 miles on it. it happened while doing some pulls trying to test out a couple of things i changed out. 2nd gear @ 4000, which is peak torque. and i just had the exhaust redone and put a massive airfilter on it, trying to remove some of the restriction so the engine can breathe. i am just guessing, but it was probably around 350wtq when it went, but i also don't know the maintainence history of the vehicle, since i bought it used. could have been a combination of several things. i will know more once the transmission shop calls me with the damage...

If you plan on making some real big power later on, like in the neighborhood of 500+ rwhp then you might want to have a badass tranny builder like Level 10 or Lentech build you one. I know they arent cheap, but you to get what you pay for. Something else must have went catastrophic with the 4R because 80,000 isnt that much and these particular trannies are rated for 700 lb/ft of tq from the factory. Oh well, sometimes a person just gets bad luck. You had mentioned about posting a picture or two of your truck. While your waiting for your tranny stuff to get situated why dont you snap a few shots and post em up?

that is my cardomain page, it has some pics of it when i first got it and a couple of when i was intalling the supercharger. i don't have any of the finished product because i was going to take a ton of pics at the dyno on wednesday, but never got to that point. i will take some more this next week when it gets back from the tranny shop, as it is an hour away...

thanks, i will get some recent pics up in the next couple of days...

my brother blew his tranny at 30,000 and then twice with the motor swap and then one time after that.... my brother drive his truck every day and he has a bov .... there is very little difrent between a bypass and bov. also they can bot be run in similar fashion. the problem with these trucks is they need big tranny coolers and shift kits that will make them last longer...

Hey bro how ya been lately? I havent seen or heard much of you as of late. Whats the Mark doing lately? Any other projects you two been working on? I will be attempting a build on a Lincoln in about 9 months-1 year or so after the explorer build. The XB-1A head unit off of my old explorer is going under the hood of an LS running 6 lbs boost on a very conservative tune and full intercooler later on when I can afford it. With 10.5:1 compression I got to be careful! It is good to hear from you. Let us know what the updates on the vehicles are.

Is Troll still running the 4R70W?

I havent heard anything different about Troll so I am guessing he still is. Dan, any updates on the Troll too while your at it?

this new tranny is awesome guys!!! it will chirp second and third right now and i still need to take it back for some more tuning...i will hopefully get back on the dyno next week, but it might be longer because i will be out of town until next wednesday...i will keep you posted, by then my smaller blower pulley should be here and then i can tune for the water/meth injection as well, i just need to pray i don't blow it up now...

Do you mean smaller pulley as in the correct one you need? Or smaller one as in more boost than what you were talking about before. With this new tranny you have how many tranny coolers you have and how big? For you purpose it would be best to have at least one big tranny cooler with dual electric fans for it. If you could fit another one inline before that then go that route too. Keeping that fluid cool to keep the tranny cool is VITAL. Since it seems like your well funded I hope you got the higher stall TC too. Just make it a one shot deal versus messing around with it later on. Also be cheaper to just tune it all at once instead of getting on the dyno and paying for multiple sessions.

nope, just the correct one i need, i will see 9-10 with this one, and i am going to add and extra cooler soon, just wanted to make sure that everything was running right first. i am also going to switch it over to amsoil as well. those two things should make a pretty big difference. i did get a 2200 stall, didn't want to get too radical with that since it is my daily driver. and yes, i am only going back one more time to the dyno, should be interesting to see how it does now...

Before you get too much further i suggest you start thinking about building your bottom end and also taking some pics of your setup to post here.

i will take some pics tonight and put them up on my cardomain page. i have been thinking about the bottom end already, i am getting scared that it is going to go, knowing my luck right now. but i am going to run it until it does...i might start looking around for something or checking into engine builders...

Short Block Possibilities...

Coast High Performance in Torance, CA:

They have very good short blocks from 302 to 347 stroker. Also, Ford Racing may be a viable choice.

One quarrel I have with this is, why waste a perfectly good stock short block? I never understood people's reasoning behind this. I hear the "I will run this block till it dies, then I will build a forged one.” It sounds like a waste to me. Since you obviously plan on getting a built short block sooner or later, why not get it sooner and then with your old engine you can have your fun with rebuilding it at your own leisure and then sell it or keep it afterwards. Just a suggestion. When I build my 03 I plan on running enough boost off the stock bottom end to have a little fun with, but I don’t plan on getting too extreme yet. Then once I swap out the stock block and the stock tranny I will turn the wick up. This not only ensure that I wont have any unplanned problems but also if the built and forged stuff ever breaks for some reason, I can go back to my stocker stuff that I rebuilt and still have a good base to build off of shortly after.

i have updated my cardomain page, the link is above, so you can see pics of the current setup...

but to respond to your post, the problem i am running into right now is i just spent a major chunk of change on a new tranny. that was not in the "engine building" budget. :p

so i am going to try to run this one for a while the way it is and see what kind of power i can make the way it sits...worst case senario, if i blow this up in the next month or two, i would probably go and buy a low mileage explorer 5.0 from a junkyard and run it for a while until i can build a motor...the thing i am hoping is that with a good tune, which i already have, i should be able to run with this setup for a while unless something mechanical breaks, which i am not forseeing right now because the motor is running really strong. i am always pushing the envelope with anything i drive, the X is no different. sometimes you get lucky, sometimes you don't...the tranny would be the case in point.

i do have one question though, what is the difference between running a factory block as opposed to an aftermarket block from an emissions standpoint. i don't care that much about emissions, but i am curious why it says on the coasthigh website that bob posted that they have the only emissions legal 347? what makes it emissions legal?
