I'm debating whether or not to fix my Explorer, or just junk it. Much will depend on what I can do with my engine.

It's a 1993, manual transmission. The easiest option would be a remanufactured engine, about $1800. Any body have an estimate for installation?

I've heard something about a V8 conversion, but I don't know if that will apply to my particular model. Any info?

I had the same problem several weeks ago.... V8 conversion is possable, but its realy expensive... A stright swap with the same motor is faily simple if you have the tools and time to do it your self... Sorry cant help with the cost estimete for it, I junked my X and upgraded....

if it were me i would drop a carbed 351 in there it should bolt right up to the tranny

Go with a remanufactured engine, same as yours. If you install a bigger engine you'll have fab work and drive train work. Bigger would be nicer, but the mods will cost plenty.

To install a direct replacement should be around $600-$800.

To the already on-the-weak-side Mazda 5spd tranny? I highly doubt they would bolt up and if they did the tranny wouldn't be able to take the 351's tq

i know someone around here has done it i cant rember who though, all i know is he has a red 1st gen

I had a remanufactured long block installed last summer. My shop charged ~900 to install.

if you do anything..do EFI not carb

if you are going with a direct replacement def go with efi. however if you go with a 302 or whatever it will be much easier to go with carb i also don't think that nevada has emissions

his name was redsport, he never showed any pics and he has not been around in months. there is no way he bolted it up to the mazda 5spd. if i remember correctly he had a c4 or c6 "in" with supposedly. but like i said, never any pics and has not been around since he said it was in.

i think a newer 302 out of a newer explorer..very good idea!!

I had my remanufactured engine installed for $550. The shop averages one a week so they are pretty efficient.

From what I was looking at, I don't think the new ones fit the manual transmission, only the automatic.

The 302 will not fit either the M5R1 or the A4LD. If you want to do a V8 swap, you will need a tranny that fits too.

Is the M5R1 the same as the MD05?

I have to replace the transmission, but I may also replace the engine while I'm at it.

Perhaps I look for a new transmission that will accept a V8 and will still bolt up to my existing transfer case? I like the idea of a V8 because I am often towing a trailer, which puts a bit of a strain on my little V6.

If you are going to do a V8 swap the easiest way is to buy a wrecked donor. I'm not sure what t-case you'd want, the V8's you'd be looking at would be AWD or 2wd. I believe a manual bw1354 would bolt up. I'm not sure on that though.

So they have a different Automatic transmission for both the V8 and V6? That would be weird if they did that, not very cost effecient. If it's the same automatic for both, then the 302 should work with a manual?

It's not the same auto for both. The explorer 5.0 uses the 4R70W. The explorer 4.0 (for your year) uses the A4LD.
