I just got my Explorer and I haven't had a chance to get a shop manual for it. Can someone give me the torque settings for the upper intake and the front wheel bearings? Also, can someone give me the tightening sequence of the upper intake manifold bolts? I'm going to try to re-torque the upper intake in hopes that it will help with my bad pinging problem. I read insome thread that doing this worked on one guy's ex. Thanks, I really appreciate it.

Upper intake or lower intake, I thought most people were having problems with the lower intake manifold bolts.

The lower intake gets torqued 15-18 ft. lbs.

The upper intake is the same spec, same sequence.

That's great! thanks a lot, i really appreciate the help. are the upper intake torque settings the same?

Here ya go buddy........

Step 1: 72 in/lb
Step 2: 144 in/lb
Step 3: 192 in/lb

Don't have the scanner hooked up to give you a picture of the torque sequence...sorry about that.

I also couldn't find the wheel bearing torque specs for 91-94's.

The Haynes manual does not list a specific sequence for tightening the nuts on the upper manifold, it only lists the torque specs (15 to18 ft-lbs), The manual does say thighten them evenly of course. On the front wheel bearings, Step 1 35 ft-lbs, Step 2 Back off 1/4 turn, Step 3 tighten to 16 in-lbs, Step 4 (outer nut) 150 ft-lbs

TDG - Once again, thanks for the info, that really helps!! I may just take off the upper and retorque the lower while I'm at it. I dunno, I'll have to see how much time I have to mess with it.

Jason_25 - those numbers seem kinda high compared to what the others are saying. That's interesting. My torque wrench only goes up to 150 ftlbs, so I hope those are incorrect. What manual did you get your info from? Thanks for the input!

Bionc Marsh. - Thanks for the info.. Those numbers on the wheel bearings are very helpful!

My numbers are stated in in/lb's not ft/lb's

I'm just going by what my Haynes manual says.

DOH! I should have noticed that difference.. sorry.. I've been awake for way too long :) thanks again!

The inch lb. numbers calculate right in the middle of the ft. lb. numbers so it's a matter of what scale your torque wrench uses.

My guess is that to get to the bolts on the lower intake with a torque wrench it would be easiest to pull the upper intake off which is no big deal but I would recommend replacing the gasket on the upper intake while you are in there. I've never found the upper intake nuts to be a problem but I have come across a few lower intake bolts that were loose.

Good luck with it, let us know what happens.

I went to NAPA today and tried to buy a gasket for the upper. Nope, gotta buy a whole freakin kit/set for $46. Forget that. So, I decided I would go ahead and clean the MAF sensor. Wow.. i looked at it, and I could visibly see the dirt/grime/crap built up on it! I cleaned it and put it back in. That cured every bit of the pinging problem, and the X was then more responsive and felt much better while driving! Thanks for the input! I may retorque the intakes if I can find a single gasket outside of a kit.
