Ive got a 91 explorer with the 4.0 v-6.

the question is how good is it? what kind of performance can i expect from it?

im in college so i cant really afford to put the 5.0 in like i want (please dont tell me to get rid of my car fact is i love it so should you) so can i do anything to use my baby as a 4x4 bad ass machine like i want?

oh and is it true that the t-case and transmission are actually good they just need tlc?

thanks later days

Performance wise its not the ideal engine. Not a lot of horses, mediocre torque. There are some aftermarket options and it takes a lot to get it going but it won't ever put up the same numbers as the v8 or the sohc. And believe me, no one here is going to tell you to get rid of your Ex.

Lots of offroad potential though. There are some mean first-gens on here that can go anywhere.

What kind of off roading are you out to do?

If you want to race, or otherwise are more concerned with speed, then work on squeezing a few numbers out of the engine.

Personally, I find that if high range isn't good enough, then I drop it into low range and there's more than enough torque/power to move the truck, as long as there's enough traction. In my own opinion, I'd say that traction is more important than engine numbers for most poeple off-roading. Example: my brother used to drive an old 'yota with a 22R 4 banger. Clearly, my 4.0 V6 could put out better numbers. However, he went places I couldn't simply because he had better tires (=better traction). What little torque he was producing went into moving the truck. All the torque I generated went into spinning wheels.

It's up to you and exactly what you want to accomplish.

well im not lookin to go to extreme just yet cause i dont really have the time nor the money for gas! (yikes)

but i still wanta be able to decide one mornin to buzz off on a trail and have a little fun some times.

i was thinkin of just putting a 4" lift on it for now with 33 bullet steel rims (like $50 a pop at les schuab) and call it good till i can finally put in the 5.0

but im really not all into to racin so i guess i could make do with the v-6 right?
