What do you think about this XLT?

He's already asked if I'd consider 3500. I'm a try 3200 but I think 3500 is a deal. Bet he'd do 3400 no problem

I'll be ok with 2wd for half the miles, much better interior with clean title etc....

Yeah that's a much better deal. That one looks really nice actually. I would say 2wd is fine unless your somewhere where it snows alot. Looks like its been treated well. Nice find!

It sounds good. The only thing I would be worried about is the transmission.

True. Being that it was the kids first car he may not have taken great care of it. Spend alot of time checking things out and driving if you can.

Going tomm to meet his mom so I can test drive it. Kid seems nice but apparently an
explorer doesn't look cool so he wants a car... lol

Yeah I'm going to drive it and see how it feels.

I've talked him down to 3,350 from 4k so I'm pretty happy with the price as long
as it checks out and drives okay. Such a better deal than the other one.
I might could get him down to 3200 but 3350 is a deal.

So what's the fix? A new transmission? Because at this cost a $750 tranny in the future would still be worth it at 3350....

I'll have to research what it is that is causing failure... Def makes me
feel sketchy.

Oh no... the 2002 and 2004 ford explorer make 2 of the top 3 worst cars
on that site.... :(

Be sure to check the tranny fluid to see if it smells burnt or if its dark brown. That's a good indicator that a rebuild or new tranny is coming soon. When I bought my 94 the tranny fluid was very dark brown, but smelled fine. I've dropped the pan and changed the filter 3 times in the last 6 months, as well as flushed about 20 quarts of new fluid through it, and it still stays brown. Still runs strong though so you never know

The only way to check the fluid is to drain it. There is no dipstick! Not that easy to simply drain and refill just to check the fluid. Ford wanted the 5R55 series to be filled for life HAHA

They only call for service under severe duty. So over time they get dirty insides and leak. But no need to service them! Thats why they die :dead:

I would NOT do a flush but simply drop the pan change the filter and refill.

Thats what I did for mine. The worst case scenario is that my car missed one service being only 63K when I bought it. But the lady went to ford for everything till she parked it...

Mine is working great but it only has 66K on it now. I have heard them going out at 90K but some on here going past 200K and then start to act up, soooo Russian roulette i say haha

So I showed him that link and he dropped the price to 3,000 lol, but still claims absolutely no issues.

If you can PM me the license plate he has on it or the vin number I can run a car fax maintenance report for you.

Yeah id drop the pan and change the filter for sure. As far as flushing goes I always just disconnect the rubber cooler line and flush and fill 2 quarts at a time. That's assuming it has a cooler

Jose, that second is sounding pretty good, especially with the price drops, Check it as you would the first one. Pointers on the transmission ----- Put it into gear within a few seconds of startup. Forward and reverse, Make sure theres no excessive lag before it goes into gear. Watch the first to second shift, feel listen and watch the tach, make sure it shifts normally and not very early or very very late. Get up to highway speed and make sure it drops rpms, etc. Hit the overdrive off button and see if it raises the rpms or if the O/D off light starts flashing. Do a quick almost panic stop when you can and immediately take back off. Make sure it stays in gear, doesnt clunk as your stopping or as you go to take off again. Those are the biggest pointers I can give you on these transmissions.

IF you do get any of those to show a problem, dont throw it out just yet. Most of those could be that its just low on fluid. As another poster mentioned, there is no dipstick, you have to check it through the plug on the bottom. Really a lot easier than it sounds. Lots of threads on it and I can pm you if you still need help. (I would check the fluid after purchase regaurdless of symptoms that may or may not appear) This one does sound like a lot better choice so far.

The first one still doesn't sound quite right after you finding the pictures of the damage. Like the other poster, I still don't see enough to total it, Maybe they ran over whatever they hit and tore up stuff underneath? Easily a possibility which could result in enough to total it. Still could have been fixed properly, if this second one doesn't pan out, Maybe keep the first on your list to check into.

As far as the 4 wheel drive, My Explorer was 2 wheel, Drove it in snow and ice without much problem, some mud. No replacement for 4 wheel but it got me where I needed to go. My Mounty, the previous owner took the front axle out when it started grinding instead of fixing it, so its not AWD right now. I also had it in some nasty ice and snow with crappy tires and got around pretty well. Deep snow or playing in serious mud, I wouldn't necessarily do much of it or do it purposely. Thats gonna be up to you. I've had a few other 4wd and I prefer it, so the mounty will get the awd back in order as soon as funds allow. We also tend to get nasty winters here and I occasionally hunt mud holes and we have some real dirt roads here.... Wishing you the best on your purchase and We're here for advice and whatever help we can offer. Used transmissions around here run about 600+. A rebuilt will probably set you back $2500, new around $3600. Depending on where you go and what all you have done.

That being said, Just write down or try to remember what I said about what to check on the trans, drive it like I stated to drive the other one, listen and feel the truck as much as possible. Price is excellent even if there are minor issues.

Last thing, Listen for rear end whine, Most of these have it but if it sounds like an airplane, then it may need a rear diff, Some whine is considered normal. If your not sure if its the diff, go somewhere where you can get fast enough to hear it and swerve some, If it goes away or gets quieter swerving one way, its a wheel bearing, if not and it stays constant with speed and changes pitch letting off the gas then its the diff. All depends on how loud or if you can feel anything associated with the noise. If I was close Id go with ya and check it out but thats a little bit of a hop for me based off the craigslist ad you posted.

In closing, every car line is going to have a forum or B!tch site complaining about car problems/common problems. Thats why we have our forums to help people out with those and so people can find out how bad or not bad a problem may actually be. Our trucks have inherited flaws but most are easily taken care of thanks to all the info and help here. Good for you though using the links you found to get a better deal. Hope it turns out to be a good one for ya. Keep us posted and hope to see you making new posts about the new ride.

Looks like a good deal! Let us know how it goes.

Looked at it and I'm going to pick it up tomm.

Needs some work but at the price I think it's worth it.
As far as tranny, sounded and felt good aside from 2nd into 3rd, just a slight delay. Maybe with a flush and cleaning and new fluid and filter it will help,
or at least keep it from getting worse. I don't think that's enough to steer me away.

As you can see in the photos, the suspension components that should be newer
at 96k miles due to wear items appear to be newer, which shows some sign of care for the vehicle. Underside is clean/rust free (aside from the driveshaft)

Let me know what you guys think.

Ghetto wheels and side trim will be replaced!

Rear panel isn't cracked! Maybe a good sign? lol

I already went by the local junkyard and found a 3rd gen with black side panels to replace the chrome crap....
Stock wheels though not sure i like em.

Nice! Exterior appears almost pristine for a 2003 @ 96k. Clean, untreated undercarriage is always a good indicator of care. GL

to keep the rear panel from cracking, close the glass right next to the ford logo!

Ford weakened behind the logo so it could be recessed. Closing it by the edges stresses the panel and cracks it easily!

Looks nice! The chrome isn't that hideous, at-least on camera...

But must say. LOOKS CLEAN! :D

At 96K that is as clean as mine was at 63K from FL! I would wash the underside and coat it. Will last forever. (did that for mine to stop NY salt from eating it!)

At $3,000 (from 4k) and being told that's their bottom dollar I'm not going to push it for less.

I would take it and run!

Wait! Make sure 4wd works first! Many don't because of CM failure. But still at $3K, sounds like a deal!
