what engine can i fit in a '98?

my timing chain is gone and the ticking sound is unbearable, mechanics are asking at least 1800 to fix, or 2500 to put a newer engine in, i have a '98 4.0 v6 sohc, what are my options for motors? without having to change the tranny, computer, driveshaft etc. plz leave me any suggestions

Three engines were used in '98, I believe. 4.0L OHV V-6, 4.0L SOHC V-6, and 5.0L OHV V-8.

The V-6s most likely, but not spoken with certainty, have identical converter-housing bolt patterns; the V-8 is definitely different. This means, right off, if you would like to go to a V-8, be prepared for some radical changing needed.

The limitations you place on making changes pretty much require replacement with the same type engine you now have. imp
