What Generation iPod Needed????

I am looking at tying in an iPod to my 2011 Explorer and know from a discussion somewhere, which I can no longer locate, that you have to be a certain year ipod, or generation ipod, and later, to make it work.

Can anyone expand on that?

I believe it is on the software as ipods often get updated so probably the software tbat was out in 2011 or newer
