I have a 2000 explorer xlt 4.0 ltr. I want to start doing some modifications. I want to put an intake in. I dont know much about it and i need some input. Is there more to an intake thatn just putting a new one in? Are there other components to it to make it effective? Also what reccomendations do you have for the intake I should go with?

I prefer the stock one with a good filter :)

If you'd rather save some money, you'd be better off with a better filter in the stock airbox as "IZwack" said. And get aftermarket piping.

The stock airbox is actually a very good one and most of the restriction is in the piping.

You should also remove the silencer.

I have been very happy with my K&N intake.

if you want spend money to get best result with best protection then you should use K&N intake with Amsoil synthetic filter

Amsoil EAA122

I plan to switch to an Amsoil EAA122 dropin filter (provides excellent filtration and air flow) as soon as I modify my airbox upper section to accommodate a 4 inch diameter intake.

I don't like pulling air from the engine compartment in city driving.

kn with an amsoil filter, ive also heard many good things about volant. you wil get ideal performance by running the stock airbox with an amsoil filter or other hi-po filter.

Agreed, I have heard good things about Volant too. They didnt have anything out for my 4.0 OHV at the time. There was not anything much out when I bought the K&N FIPK kit. I dont remember any other choices aside from something by KKM? I believe which was a green colored intake system.
