This is my first post folks, so take it easy on me!! I have a chipped (is that a word :D ), 98 mountaineer 5.0 AWD, with schweet 18" rims and exterior blah blah blah. Now Id like to do some additions for some power and hopefully some fuel economy (this thing is a tank!!).

I often trailer my race bikes, and a boat, so Id like to get some advice or comments on users experiences with install, brand, fuel improvements etc from people with the intake kits. Ive seen something called mac? and kkn? and at least one other. Im gonna check that EE web page Ive seen a lot about on here also.

Thanks for any opinions and the help, great web site!!

John

The first thing people are going to tell you is to use the "Search" feature of the site. It'll get you tons and tons of information. If I were you, I'd do an advanced search and search for threads with "intake" in their titles. You'll find more info than you'll know what to do with.

NYC97XLT- I appreciate the soft (as in not-so-rude) response of the typical "use the search feature you dumb newbie". ;) I sorta expected that, and I guess I wasnt very clear on my questions. I have done lots of searches since Ive joined, lots of info, but not that much on mountaineers or results. I was hoping for some other -mountaineer- folks experiences with these intakes and what they are using. Especially mpg results. And install issues, if any.

Ill probably go with the MAC from EE. Does the intake upgrade kit come WITH a 75mm Pro-M, or a 70mm sensor or just use the stock system, is that an additional component? And what would this do to my mpg, if anything?

All of the open air filter intakes like MAC, KKM, K&N will give you about the same power and MPG performance. The stock air tube isn't really the restrictive part so whether you get a intake tube is up too you. Which one you get depends on how much you want to spend.

just an fyi for you, newbie ;) the mounties and the explorers with the 5.0 and awd are mechanically identical

You will never hear me tell you to search; I shall help you as best as I can.

I just installeda new Mac on my '99 today. Take a look at http://www.explorerforum.com/forums/showthread.php?t=130982&highlight=mac .

Prior to that I ran a KKM. The KKM is just the filter and adapter whereas the Mac and K & N are complete intake tube assemblies.

Welcome aboard, keep asking questions and good luck with whichever one you select.

The MAC is so damn georgous

I'm here in Va Beach and have done numorous mods to my 5.0. The mac really sounds good at high RPM's (see vids)

I'd like to second that.

YES - YES - YES :chug: :chug: :bounce: :chug: Now thats what Im talkin about!! Awesome info guys!! Al - I had seen your thread before I asked about this... that was the thread that led me to really, really want to do this! I hope it is as simple as you say. Looks like Im gonna get the mac! ;) And it sounds like a good steel filter is the way to go... any suggestions on that product?

Al and others - Thanks a whole lot. So have you purchased the additional MAS? Did you get the 75mm?

OK, and just to really throw this whole topic in the air... I got some messages from people about needing "cold-forced" air. Hence, why ram air, nitro, etc. actually work so well. And Ive been advised to just "drill" my factory box. Now I understand that this is the more cost-effective way, but it sounds like there may be some real advantages to this. For me, the money is not the issue, not that Im going to put a super charger on either, but If the new intake really is just for the bling bling and sound effect, maybe the drill it out approach is something to think about, granted emissions may now be a further consideration.

Ok, head is now spinning, any new thoughts from you guys!? Thanks again.

You can take the air silencer off your air box. Then drill it out, if you like it just keep it that way. If not then get the new intake.

Yes, it really is that simple. You will not be disappointed.

The filter with the Mac is excellent; there is no reason to get another. I used the KKM intake and filter for years with no problems whatsoever.

Doug and I will be dyno testing the Pro-M MAF in a few weeks, Doug is a believer in the stock Ford MAF and he is the MAN when it comes to 4 l performance. Its wise to listen when he speaks.

Drilling the airbox will improve air intake to some extent but will never be as good as the Mac. KKM or K & N.

Good luck with your plans ....

Aldive - thanks for the info and suggestions. Im getting the back-ordered MAC and the Dynomax super turbo. Im not a fan of the uselessly loud street-squids that rattle car alarms and beg to be pulled over by the cops  , but thats just on my ride. I do find a certain joy when I hear throaty blast, BoominX, your video's rock!! :D :D

Here is the crummy news, you heard it here first, no more Pro-M. Out of business. :fire: :( Oh well. I think Ive done enough damage to my CC today! :D

Thanks guys, any more advice or info, keep it rollin!!

Really? Please enlighten us more; where did you hear this?

With their inept customer service it doesn't surprise me at all.

If true, the Pro-M will become lke the EE airdamns, Rare and expensive

Well, I went to order the 75mm and EE claimed, "cant do it, sorry".

This is of course, after I finally reached someone at EE. I left messages and was blocked by their automatic phone service many too many times. :fire: :fire: He went on to explain that the owner is having "health" issues and decided to bag it.

So, I made an order and now I find out, the intake is back order 1 week min and the dynomax super turbo is back ordered 2 weeks minimum!! AAARRRRRGGGGHHHHHHH!!! :banghead: :banghead: :frustrate I mentioned the great help from you guys on the site and Dave didnt seem to care or make any offers. Hmmmpphh.

So I guess this stuff is more popular than I thought! I guess that gives me a couple weeks to re-evaluate my decisions even more. So, this gives me time to hear more ideas on alternatives.

Thats pathetic, when John was there EE was great, go to the pro-M website, thats where EE dropships them from, are also cheaper. And they are still online
Also Others sell the MAC I believe, is not like EE makes them, good luck

Thats a perfect example of a once great company that has simply gone to hell in a handbag. When John V left, so did any resemblance of customer service. I have had similar problems trying to speak to a human on the phone.

Get your Mac elsewhere. Try Mac at http://www.macperformance.com/.

Good luck ....
