What Is The Transfer Case Weight For?

I took mine off years ago, but was just now wondering what it's purpose is.

I would guess it would be there to cancel out some sort of harmonic imbalance/vibration. Just a guess...

x2 on Harmonics. I've seen some 4405 transfer cases that don't have them at all.

I agree it's to reduce harmonics. My 04 Ranger has the weight, and it
still had a slight vibration at about 40 mph. After finally checking the
oil level and adding a pint, the vibration is gone. I figured the chain must
have been partially uncovered and causing a harmonic at that speed...?
