What is this?

2000 Mountaineer, 2wd, V8, 95k miles on it.

While looking under the hood, I noticed something. I have no clue what it is. It's the thing in the pictures with the orange cap. The thing that concerns me is that there appears to be a place for 2 wires to come out- but there's only 1 wire coming out. What is this thing, and is it in need of repair?

I think that's the Temp gauge sender

huh. I have no clue. The temp guage seems to be working fine on the dash. Does it NORMALLY have just 1 wire coming out of it like that?

Im not 100% sure, I haven't looked at the one on my Explorer for awhile, On my Mustang I am positive that there is only one wire coming off it. My guess would be that it is fine.
