What is your temp gauge at?

I don't get why people don't use the cheap ELM327 devices now - they are around $14 for one. I have one in each car.
Almost everyone has a smartphone... software price ranges from free to $5 (Torque Pro).

On a Win laptop with Bluetooth you can also use the free Forscan that's the best software out there.

A scangauge will just plug in and become 100 gauges. True it displays only 4 at a time, but you can easily toggle between them.

Not that expensive when you consider what it would cost to plumb in a coolant temp gauge, trans temp gauge, voltmeter gauge, throttle position gauge, Ignition timing gauge, Tachometer, Speedometer, etc.

It will also display real time MPG, read codes, and, clear codes.

The elmscan requires a laptop on board, and is not quite as convenient once you have all the cords all over the place.

The scangauge can be mounted right between the cubbyhole ( message center) and heater controls. Run the wiring behind the console and you have a nice clean setup.

I use a hndheld IR thermometer for powdercoating. The problem with them is the surface you point it at. The more reflective the finish the less accurate the reading.

I could hang 10 test panels of different colors in my oven for the same amount of time, and get 10 different temps if the colors were that much different.

;)

Interesting. I've never used mine that way.

What did surprise me is that distance didn't seem to make any difference to the reading.

IMO Torque Pro is the best one.

I see there's now a real time mpg app available to add to Torque. It cost a little over $3.

The ScanGauge 2 is well worth the cost. For what it's worth, my temperature gauge will always be right in the middle anywhere from 180 to about 230.

Out of curiosity, what can Torque Pro do that ScanGauge 2 can't?

Nothing. It's just $20 (ELM reader plus Torque) instead of $160-180. Sure it requires also a smartphone.

If you don't have one, an used Android phone (like Motorola Droid X2) is another $20-25. It can be used as on-dash camera recorder too... for accidents.
