New to the site, looks great. I was researching chips and was wondering if there was a significant difference in the chip manufacturer. I've read that a lot of people like the Apten chip, but is it that much better than, say, a JET chip? Thanks.

Nice. Thanks. I was thinking more along the lines of a performance computer chip...

But yes, I also prefer Doritos!

I've been hearing ome great things about Bahma Chips around here. They are a sponsor of the site I believe and suposedly have great customer service. Search the forum for them and see what you come up with. I have no first hand experience with them so I am just relaying info. Apten also has a pretty good reputation around here.

Chopin sells performance things also, cheep:)
BORN AGAIN,GOD LOVES ME

Go with a Superchips Tuning ("SCT") based chip (Apten uses SCT now) and get a quality programmer to write tunes to your specs and desires. Bamachips (Doug) and Hypnotic Illusions (Wayne) are two site sponsors that are excellent to deal with and are both SCT dealers (Apten is also a dealer, they don't have their own "chip" per se). You'll hear Apten mentioned a lot, but their service is far less than stellar these days. I've got an Apten programmed chip and it's been decent. I recently had both Doug and Wayne write me some tunes on my chip (I can store 4 programs), so I can't comment on their handiwork yet (chip is in transit), but others like their work.

Also, don't get hung up on a chip. For a few $$$ more, you can get a flasher. Much more convenient to use than a chip which has to be attached to your vehicle at all times. With a flasher, you load the program into your computer and it stays there. You disconnect the flasher cable and still have the benefits of a program. It's equally easy to return you Ex to stock. I can speak from experience about connection problems with chips, and the adverse reaction to your Explorer's reliability when there is a connection issue.

I've never heard much in the way of good reviews of Jet stuff. Seems that you get what you pay for. Definitely use the SEARCH function on this site to scour the archives. There have been countless discussions on this topic already.

bang for the buck a chip or a flasher can not be beat.
APten around here seems to be yesterdays news.
Bama and Hypnotic seem to be the two on the top of the list now a days.

Is he able to use a flasher though? I thought 1995 still had EEC IV/OBD 1?

Oh yeah, you are right.

Duh, so true. One of them old fashund Explorers. ;)

1995 was a split year, some EEC4 some EEC5's just depends on the production date. I had a late production 95' that was EEC5. If you will send me your calibration code from the PCM I can tell you exactly which one you have. OR, if you'll look under your hood on the driver's side below the fuse box and see if you have a connector for checking trouble codes then you have an EEC4. It is a wide triangle shaped connector with a single gray connector in the same bunch.

You will still have the connector under the dash either way because it was used to check the GEM module for codes.

Just send me your info and I'll be happy to see what I can do for you and give you some more info on my products.

Thanks, Doug.

Whoa... lots of info to take in here! I'll try to research the subject some more. Thanks a lot for everyone's help!
