I went to tennesse last weekend for the big rod run in Pigeon forge, and man were there so many nice cars there. My question is does any one know what kind of exhaust those boys are running on there hot rods and mucle cars. I mean the ones with the big the huge supercharger hangin out of the hood and that kinda stuff. All these cars and trucks had pretty much the same sound, It was like a thumping and It was really loud almost like straight pipes but there was just enough muffler there to make it sound good, and I could see the mufflers on most of the cars. I know alot of that type of mufflers say that they are for high horsepower motors because of the backpressure I guess, but does any one know what type of mufflers that could be and If they would sound any good on a puny little six cylinder. I kinda want unique sound not the standard flowmaster of borla sound, I have too many friends with that. Im also wanting the loudest possible exhaust especially in bottom end and Idle.
Kinda a bad description but any help would be good:-)

Most of 'em are probably running some sort of glass pack muffler. All it has in it is a straight perforated pipe wrapped with fibergalss. It's the loudest muffler type that is legal in most states. We used to run 'em in high school on our muscle cars.

Pigeon Forge WOWWWWWWWW Fun fun fun!!! That place is such a tourist trap...party all night? I went to the Minitruckin' Nats there awhile back and pretty much stayed up till 3-5 am each night.

For REAL exhaust on rods or anything high performance, especially with superchargers/turbos, etc. it is all custom...anyone serious about power usually doesnt run a muffler at all..some run fake mufflers and cats, and others with street legal needs run flowmasters, cherry bombs (pointed backwards) or theres a few lesser known brands that make racing exhausts that run the line between street and strip.

a tip here is you dont want to run an exhaust thats too wild for what you will actually use it for. A pre-fab cat-back Gibson system or a complete header-back system from Borla is very good for even a semi-stock Explorer. Otherwise, you can always go with a custom system yourself with a Flowmaster for a louder sound.

Yea a lot of them were runnin those there pretty popular, I have one now on my truck. On the cars I could see the mufflers on they looked like your ordinary oval or rectangle muffler, and they had pipe run out right before the rear axle and then the muffler and then the muffler had just a curved little tip on it for and outlet. I was lookin In a magazine just a minute ago and I saw that borla made a few race mufflers and Im just wonderin if maybe thats what they were. I dont really think most of these guys were worrying about being too street legal alot of the best cars were brought in on trailers bacause they couldnt be drivin on the street.

hey thanx man that really helps! I have thought about makin my own system. I can do alot of frabicating myself I have about all the equipment to make one my self. The main thing Im stuck on is how would I design the Muffler, Im plannin on goin with a fully welded style but I cant figure what would be the best way to get some backpressure but not too much and to have a good sound. I guess I'll just have to expirement a little with different designs. I dought I'll be running my catalytic converter cause I want such a loud sound, and the converter makes that hard. Im not all that worried about the converter as long as I can get it back on for inspection. Even with straight pipes I'll still not be as loud as some of those v8 trucks with flowmasters I hope. Hell maybe Ill just go broke and put a dang v8 In my truck! that'll fix it. Now speakin of Pigeon Forge, That place is awsome. Its like a strip at the beach except when you turn off of it your in the middle of dang knowhere. We tried to party there but we kept gettin in trouble. My friend got drunk and tried to drive his F150 across the river behind the motel we were in. Fortunately he got through it easily but unfortunatle by the time he got across the biker police were already on the other side waitin for him, and the bigest problem of all was that he is only 17. I dont think I need to go there again LOL! hey what were you sayin about pointing a glasspack backwards what does that do, wouldnt It sound the same?

A guy that lives near me has a V6 Ranger with dual straight pipes and it is louder than my friends z71(350) with straights. The ranger sounds exactly like an eighteen wheeler (One of those really loud ones).

Keep your cat, but go with a glass pack right behind it, you could even go with dual glass packs to smooth out the sound a bit, but if you want real loud ,especially in the low end just cut everything off right after the cat.,and slap on a cherry bomb..tweny bucks, and it scares children and the elderly:D Also opens up some power..Oh yeah, check your local laws, Im in fla, and good ole bush says we dont have to worry about emissions anymore,he he...
