I am not sure if this is in the right section but if so....as it says...what kind di you run?
I put in Mobil 1 Full Syn. in. The only reason is because my brother kept it in there when he gave it to me. I have been considering switching it to Royal Purple.

mobil 1 is good and reasonably priced. I know some guys will disagree over this, but it's really more important to change the oil every 3000 than it is to run synthetic.

I've always ran Pennzoil conventional in everything, and never had anything but good luck.

just as a side note, mobil 1 can be had for $21/5 quarts at wal mart. and motorcraft filters are only about $3 there.

assuming you have the 5.0 v8, using conventional or synthetic, i would change it at 3000 miles, unless you are always running highway (30 miles one way or more), in which case you could go 4000 miles.

Also, run 5w-30 year round. 10w-30 is unnecessary, unless your engine's running REALLY hot. Running 10w-30 when it is not needed will lead to increased low temp wear.

This topic comes up all the time. You'll get those that will tell you that synthetic is a waste of money. Others come in on the other side of the equation.

Personally, I've always sworn by syn and use Amsoil exclusively. I use Dead Link Removed, their flagship oil. Oil change intervals are one year or 35,000 miles. I pay less in oil changes than I did when I was changing every 3,000 miles. I always use Amsoil Ea filters at each change. It's good stuff.

Royal Purple is fine. Some will tell you that it's better than other synthetics, but I've never been convinced.

3000 mile oil change myth.

and here.

Makes sense. People find it hard to ditch old habits. I've been doing the once a year routine for several years now without incident.

I run Mobil 1 5w30 and change every 5000 miles= 2x a year. My next oil change will be with Royal Purple. Only because I found a Mom/Pop dune buggy place near me that sells Royal Purple cheaper than I can get Mobil 1 at Walmart for.

I've been running Amsoil since 1977. I regularly drive my stuff for 250K miles or more, and use extended drain intervals as much as 20K. Try that with Penzoil!

Interestingly, I'm typing this on my Blackberry while sitting at Tri-Count Ford in Kentucky. There is a great big poster on the wall recommending full synthetic motor oil, and listing all sorts of benefits. If Ford thinks synthetic is great stuff and they're trying to upsell it, why not everyone else.

Wake up folks. This is 2009. Synthetics are the way to go.

5w-30 royal purple,k&n oil filter for me.changed at 5k miles.

I use Mobil 1 High Mileage, and change it as soon as it starts to darken...

"Darkening" oil is not a sign it needs changing. A common misconception.

I have heard that Mobil is good for a loooong time, I just change my oil frequently for the fun of it and it makes me feel better, the X always seems to run better after I work on it (I know it's in my head).

well.... +1, everytime i do something to my X, even small stupid details, i kindda get a little of a newer car feeling hehehe... my last fix was to spray all the moving joints in the rear suspension with silicone, to get rid of a little squeak when i got into the truck or in speedbumps, and i definitely feel better for it jajaja...

oh, and i discovered ELF motor oils some years ago, and i love them.... have them in all my cars, and they give me great mileage between changes, great cold start lube, and actually my tune ups last a little longer. Depending the car i use ELF molygraph or presticarrera. ELF is used in some F1 and WRC cars, so that´s gotta be some kind of respectable quality control.

The most important thing is the air filter. All contaminants in oil come from the cylinders, the air going through the air cleaner. If you use no air filter, or a K&N, expect your oil to be dirtier and blacker faster.

If you can keep oil from becoming dirty, and catch more before and after(air filter/oil filter), you can use oil longer. Amsoil can last 25k miles and more, if it is kept clean. I use their air filters and oil filters.

My Amsoil was still almost clear after 9500 miles.

Anything Valvoline (especially MaxLife...great oil)...Motorcraft, Amsoil (the BEST, period).

You cant go bad using Mobil1, My 98 grand marquis has 163k city driving on it and it purrs like a kitten.
Just pulled the valve cover off my sons car with 98k to replace the leaking gasket and the interior looks brand new with almost no wear on the cams. Used Mobil1 and Penzoil synthetic.
My Z06 gets Mobil1 or Amsoil.

The mobil 1 is middle of the road in quality, better than any dino oil but nowhere near Amsoil or Royal purple. The Pennzoil is the best synthetic of the common(cheaper) brands, I used that before when it was on sale for half price($2.98).

Amsoil can be had for about $7 per quart, it's worth ordering. The $50 yearly oil change is cheaper than any brand oil that you throw away every 3000 miles.

Been using Mobil 1 Extended synthetic, mainly due to price & ability to get it at wallyworld. Just changed the oil and used a Mobil 1 Filter (was on sale), but normally use Motorcraft filters. Like derek said $3 a filter, cant beat it. Usually change the oil twice a year. Everything I have read says Amsoil is the way to go though, but a little pricey for me. Until I can find Amsoil at an affordable price & dont have to pay shipping I will stick with Mobil 1 Extended.

We have never used 3000 mile oil changes, always 5000 and no problems.

Mobil 1 is not as good as it used to be. With that said the last UOA I had on a 12,000 Mobil 1 run yielded good results.

If you run full synthetic you should run an extended oil change interval 10,000 or more IMO else you're just wasting money. If you're going to run an extended change interval you need to run a high quality filter like Amsoil, K&N or Mobil 1.

It's also a good idea to change your filter at least once during that interval, especially since out filters are so small.

I do the synthetic/motorcraft filter and change every 10-12,000 and change the filter in between....I'm going to look into the Amsoil thing for sure tho....that will be sweet to only change every 25,000.
