What model to get for towing high payloads?

To give you real world experience and some specs.

I have a 91 auto 4x4 with tow package 4-door. I have 161,000 miles. This model comes with 4.0L 3.73 rear end, I think and a tranny cooler. I have owned for four years since it had 60,500 miles.

If you go to MSN.com and go to the auto section, pull up the early models 91-94 and then compare it to whatever, it will give you the tow ratings. Mine has a tow rating of 6,000 approx.

My SUV has been extremely reliable, I have not changed anything important concerning the driveline, tranny, xfer case engine. (Engine wants a top-end overhaul-I'll probabaly do it in the next six months-vavles are getting noisy).

I have towed a 79 toyota P/U 4X4 reg cab, short bed, no problems, an 84 porsche 944 no probs. I currently tow two jet skis plus fuel and camping gear which I think equals about 2,500-3,000 pounds. I average about 70-75 mph on the freeway. I live in Oxnard about 1 hour north of LA. The lake I go to is Lopez Lake, the only time I shift out of O/D is going up that grade just before Buellton. But I still get up the hill going about 55 mph. Plus I have bigger tires than stock.

And I am planning to buy a boat which will probably weigh 1,000 lbs more, I plan on using my EX to tow that.

Now I'm sure if I made some mods and fixed and tuned-up the motor, I could do even better.

To compare, my uncle has a 94 F-150 with the 305 v-8 2wd(not sure about tow package) bone stock. He was towing a 3500 boat up the same grade and same time, he said he shifted out of O/D and left the cruise control on. He left me in the dust. But I figured the vehicles weighed close to the same, plus his engine only has about 24,000 miles on it. Plus he was probably being much more aggressive about the hill, I tend to be more easy on my stuff.

Well it's not that you can't tow 5000 lb loads with a V6, it's just that it's hard on them, particularly their trannys, and if the guy wants to know what the BEST Explorer for towing is, then it's a V8.

My friend towed a 1950 Buick Sedanet on a trailer from Chicago down here to Cape (basically the length of the state of Illinois) with a Bronco II. Granted his Bronco2 has some major engine mods done, but at its heart it's still a 2.9L V6 with auto transmission. He said it wasn't something he would do often, but he kept it in the 50-60 mph range the whole time and made it. If you know anything about 1950 buick sedanets, then you know they are big heavy cars, and it was on a dual-axle trailer to boot.

I have a '92 XLT with the tow package. I have never towed anything, but the previous owner did a lot of towing. He had the electric braking system installed and towed his boat eveywhere, however I don't know how heavy it was.

I guess what I should have said of the 91-94 models what would be the best to get. ie tow package on a 93 XLT 4x2...or would a tow package on a sport 4x4 be ok. I have been looking at the v8 models, but they just currently aren't financially viable option for me. I figured if I got whatever cheap truck I can get i wouldn't have to put all the other insurance on it except for liability. Getting a 5k+ truck would mean insurance would probably be a good idea. Saving some money on insurance means money for Mods :D :D with some reserve for broken parts of course :(

For that weight, I would NOT want a Sport. When towing, the longer wheelbase is your friend.

I would consider looking at a 1/2 pickup with a V8 rather than an Explorer. Won't have to swap anything, add additional leaf springs, and you can get them with MUCH better transmissions.

For comfortably towing about 5000lbs I wouldn't even have considered an Explorer.

your only + to finding a 1st gen sport would be finding one with the 4.10s rather than 3.73

So what woud you guys think about using a bronco? It's so damn wide, but it appears that it might be my best choice for towing...how do they fair when off roading?

I've seen fullsize broncs perform well offroad.

Gas mileage is gonna suck with them anyway, so you may as well find one with the 351.

also is there a decent newer bronco forum?
