heheh shouldn't you put some gas in there;) ;) what does your door tag say for the axle code?
any mods ? tire size?

Well I don't know about you but I have never seen a frist gen. with a working gas guage. hehehe. I used to own a '91 Ranger and its gas guage didn't work either. Any way my door tag says D4 and I am running stock 235/75/15's. Don't ask me what D4 means though.

Big Red, according to explorer specs this is what you have for an axle;

D4 Limited Slip 3200 3.73

Just took a run, and this is what I got with an adjusted speed;

NOTE: Today we have 40+ winds and I was driving into them, not away!

00 - 1000 RPM
60 - 2000 RPM
65 - 2150 RPM
70 - 2350 RPM
75 - 2600 RPM
80 - 2850 RPM
85 - 3000 RPM
90 - 3150 RPM

That made a nice difference, lol

I did the conversion at http://www.offroadexchange.com/speedo.htm
and the stock tire size for a 91 Explorer was a 235/75/R15
235 * .75 = 176.25mm
176.25 * 2 = 352.5mm
352.5 mm * 0.03937in/mm = 13.877925 inches
so
13.877925 inches(side-wall) + 15 inches(the Rim) = 28.877925 or APX 29 inch stock tires

well my reverse went out and now od went out getting another x this weekend....

i know this is an old thread but i had to try
anyways i have a 91 explorer eb version, no mods what so ever, other then makeing the air filter one of thoes k&n one's, anyways befor i ever put that one on, when i bought the truck, it seemed to run fine, the rpms always ran at around 600 or 700, without it acting like it was gonna stall shake or whever, and say when i was going 65 the rpms would be between 2000 and 2500, now these days my idle is around 1200 and my lights flicker alittle, more like wobble if that makes any sense, and when going 65 the rpms cant make up their mind if they want to be 2700 or like 3500, this is going lvl ground, and im not quite sure my speedometer reads right beacuse i go 65 and people always pass me, just feels like im not going the right speed anymore, i have the normal tires that go for the truck, 235 75 15, so im not sure whats up with that, i used to get 300 miles a tank, now i get 250 or below, i know i need to replace the fuel pump, damn thing needs to be pumped like mad when its cold, but starts right up in the summer, and my gas gauge doesnt work either, lol any thoughts would be very welcomed

I tend to keep my rpm's up.. 3.73 gears. 31" tires. Manual tranny. 2-3000 rpm. Just feels like the engine is bogging a little under that to me.

Around 55 I get 1500-1700 with 3.08's and 235's
