Hey everyone
Ive been thinking about what to do with my spare tire. I cant put it in the factory mount for it due to my duel exhaust. I really like how the blazers have them mounted on the rear hatch. How would I do that to my explorer and if you guys have any other ideas Im open to ideas
Thanks

If you are interested in mounting the tire on the back...my suggestion would be to fabricate a custom rear bumper with swing out tire carrier. It's obviously not a simple task, and you need some moderate fabricating/welding skills, but that would be the best way to accomplish what you are looking for. Search the forums and you will see some nice work.

hmm well I am welder by trade I might just have to design something or modify my stock bumper

having been a bronco owner, you are much better off mounting it to the frame then the rear sheet metal like a bronco or jeep. its just alot of weight, especially when you are running 33s or 35s. bronco air and a few other placed sell the carrier hinge so you just have to fab up a bumper that can take it.

Weren't those Bronco swing outs bolted into more than just sheet metal? Wasn't there some structure behind there to help carry that load? It might not have been sized for much more than a stock sized tire, but it would have to have something more than just sheet metal back there.

yes, but not enough. now, its 20 years since the last one was built and there's been a 32 inch tire hanging off the back tugging at the panels. i am now broncoless, but my last truck is still kept near by...and that 33 is bouncing pretty bad back there when its roofless.

What about a hinge that fits to a class 3 hitch?

i saw one on an offroad subaru suv that mounted to the hitch and swung down flat when you needed to access the cargo area. would be hella east to build also

this is what i was thinking. hell, use it as a seat when your tailgating...

that would be a good idea i have a class 3 hitch and a welder it would pretty easy to make as well time to hit the drawing board

hmm thats a good place to start I will let you guys know what I come up with Ive been drawing out some ideas the last few days
