I have a 96 4.0 ohv with a 3.27 gear. I don't really like how it drives on the interstate, it seems to want to kick out of OD a tad to much when I hit moderate hills. I figure a 4.10 would help this situation. So if anyone has changed from one to the other what type of acceleration and highway cruising differences did you notice? Also, what type of fuel consumption decrease did you see? I am running 235/75/15 tires.

You will LOVE IT

thats what

fuel mileage is a wash, because right now you are having to push it to get up that hill, but not using much fuel to cruise,
whereas with 4.10 you will have to push it less, but then use up more while cruising

3.27 to 4.1 is a GREAT IDEA, if you ever plan to go with even bigger tires consider 4.56

you explorer is going to scream down the freeway with 235s and 4:10s. When i regeared mine from 3:27 to 4:10(on 31s) my milage dropped 3-4mpg.

I had to regear the speedo also as it was about 10mph off. My rpm @70mph went from 2200 up to 3500, with a manual trans.

It's great for wheeling and towing, but not commuting :(

If it is HUNTING from OD to 3 and locking /unlocking the converter (typical A4LD trans) when you hit moderate hills, try turning the OD off on the hills

I still vote 4.10 :), 3.73... thats alot of $$$$ for a little gain

gear ratio is based on trucks use and planned tire size
so:

do you tow?
is this a highway commuter?
what tire size do you plan to run? stick with these?

This is a backup/bad weather vehicle, probably drive about 1000 miles a year. I would like to go to 31 down the road, but no time soon since the tires on it now are virtually new.

might as wel go with 4.10's. Explorers came stock that way, so no biggie. I hear that ericautoparts can get you some gears for a great price.

My 96 had 4.10's and it was fine. It was even enough gear for 33's =]

I ran 4.10s with 30s, 31s, and now 33s, the truck has always performed well.

Ok This thread isn't too old so I'm going to ask. I to am looking @ 4.10 gears as I have 3.73 and am running 31's now and just.. its a dog. I have the ohv so that doesn't help the situation. I'd like 4.10's but will I notice an improvement? how much work is getting the front axle out with that cross mount in the way of the diff cover??

there are only 3 bolts that hold the diff in, once you have the halfshafts out and the driveshaft unhooked it's really easy.

I've done mine three times now, and i can have it out in about 40 minutes

Go 4.10s!!!! Mine originally had 3.55 open with the SOHC and I just couldn't take it. The 4.10s (I now have 31s...32 soon if I decided not to shoot it in the hood) work absolutely perfectly. Yeah, I got slightly less (maybe 1...if that) mpg but the performance is outstanding.
Go 4.10!!!! :thumbsup::thumbsup:

3.73 to 4.10 isn't much of a difference. Honestly I wouldn't bother unless you could do it stupid cheap. Now if your planning on going to 33's then 4.56 would be a nice bump in gears.

I probably should clarify my post too. My message was for the OP, not for the 3.73-->4.10 poster. In all honesty, I'm not sure why 31's with the 3.73 would be a problem. i would assume that 31s would be well within the range for 3.73s. Having owned a 92 with 3.73s (w/31s) and a 97 SOHC with 3.55 open AND 4.10 open (w/31s) I truly don't think it would be worth the investment. Unless you plan on doing all of the work yourself, it would definitely be costly. All said and done, I think I blew about a grand. I remember hearing from one of my 4X4 friends that unless you are going to jump 2-3 gear sizes, the effect is going to be minimal, for what it's worth.

Yes I have a shop and my buddy can get me 4.10's for pickup plus case of beer. less then 30 miles from home and I have an auto garage to do it myself. I just was curious...

I'm currently dealing with an abs/control trac nightmare so this will have to wait until I figure out what the FLIP is wrong. haha
