What to get for my 92 X?

I want to get a new stereo for my 92 4 door 4wheel drive X. Mine is equiped with the best sound option for its year. It has the jbl components in it. But weather it be whireing or something else they dont work. The hu is finaly going out and my dad took my changer so its time for a new stereo. I love alpine but heard that the rubber gromits inside wear out and then it skips like crazy...that is unless you have a smooth ride. well if i want to go off road at all this wont work. I want an indash cd player. dont need a changer. would kinda like mp3 capability, want something that i can turn up and still have clear sound. not overwelming base like alot of people have but i want it to hit hard. i dont want it to be so much though that all i hear is base. so what do you recomend? do i need to get a small sub and amp? could i use my current amp and get a small sub like an 8? what type of speakers should i get. i think i have a deck picked out. my budget is kinda tight. i mean i have not many bills or anything so i can spend what ever but i want to try and keep it reasonable. but i also want decent quality as well.

mid-grade pioneer, or kenwood excelon... maybe even a clarion for a HU. You won't like an 8" sub, unless you get a kicker solo-baric. They just don't sound quite right, not full sounding at all. Go no smaller than a 10" sub. JBL GT series, or a kicker comp. Single sealed box with a small amp on the back would do fine. I wouldn't use any stock amp to power any sub... it just doesn't work.

It all comes down to personal prefrence. I have a 12" JBL GTO series 1220D sub in a single sealed box powered by a clarion 260.2 amp. Stock JBL components (ford premium) in the 4 doors, and a kenwood excelon x879 in my truck. It's quite powerful sounding, without really draining the bank... deck was $429, sub was 150, box was 90, amp was 125, misc wiring/dei amp kit was probably another 80 bucks.

All in all, about a grand into my sound system. Granted the x879 is overkill for a radio, but i like it. I personally like quality over quantity. It's gotta be clear from a block away for me to be impressed.

You might like the same... Although a grand is a bit more than you'll probably want to spend. Just stay away from sony. :fire:

why do 8's sound funny? one thing i do know about subs is that if you go to big they cant hit as fast. also the reason why i considered using my stock amp is because it is a jbl that is offered in the top end stereo for my year x. i am looking at a pioneer hu from crutchfield. it runs about 159 after rebate before tax. that might give you an idea about how much im looking to spend on the rest of the system. thanks for your reply.

First off you'll need a helmet, and a rollcage. As for the electronics I'd buy a soldering iron, and some bread board and buy a book, and make your own stereo equipment. I don't think the faulty Ranger frame that is in the Explorer will handle more than a 6.5 inch sub.

you know i was thinking the same thing. but then i realized that im not a 16 year old trying hop up my ride so that i can get in over my head off roading and total my ride. if your gonna be a dick why dont you keep it to the forum the arguement was in or pm me. either way ill just ignore you as you are a waste of my time.

Get an Alpine CDA-9835, AWESOME HU! Subs, big names are the best, MTX, Audiobahn, JL, PG, etc. I heard newer Rockford's aren't that great so might wanna stay clear. You don't wanna use your factory amp for any sub. Why go 8"? And body lifts don't tip over vehicles

first off body lifts have nothing to do with this thread. secondly i was thinking an 8 because i dont want overwelming base or anything. i dont think i need 10's or 12's. plus an 8 would be easier to hide. im not looking for show at all. i honestly would rather have the sub and amp stuffed into the factory location or under a seat if possible so that i dont have to worry about them being in the way.

what is the purpose of a bigger sub if the size does not determine how much base? also a larger sub isnt capeable of hitting as fast as a smaller one. obviously this is a little bit more geared towards 15's vs 8's but still.

Bigger subs are capable of more power and hit lower notes.

and yess bigger subs do hit harder and hit lower notes a lot harder her a 12in w6 and i 10in w6 and i could tell the diff

The factory amp is worthless. I'd look for something that is at least 200 watts bridged, more if you can swing it. Don't get in over your head with the wiring and burn your truck down, or anything. Oh wait, your gained so much knowledge over 95offroadX in the 2 years you have over him.

yeah i wasnt looking for anything to extreme. just wanted something that i could turn up and would sound clear and have an even sound. not drownd out by base or anything. thanks for all the advice. i didnt realize you could fit a 10 in the factory location. ill probably go with that and build my own box as the mtx one was a little pricey. i have friends who have built them before so it shouldnt be that difficult.

be careful with that factory "location". If you have the ford premium sound already with the JBL 6.5" sub in there, there's nowhere for that box to go.

you can fit a 12 in the "factory" location, if you're good at box building, and don't mind loosing a few inches of your cargo area.

EDIT: I should say there's nowhere for the MTX box to go. Also i've found that a bit of dynamat behind that plastic panel where the stock amp/sub is, goes a long way.

You remove the factory crapper in order to put another box back there. If your just looking for sound quality bass you could always run a small (somwhere near 50x2)2 6 inch subs in the drivers doors, in the extra 6x8 openings in the bottom.

Anyone have experience with the MTX amplified Thunderforms? Crutchfield has the Thunder 4000 10" sub with 200watt amp for $499, 100watt amp for $349 and no amp for $299. They plop right in place of the JBL factory sub.

An 8" sub would sound fine. How horrible do you think the factory 6 1/2 is? If done right an 8" or a pair of 8" can sound great.

I have an 8 year old Alpine head unit and changer, they are just starting to skip, once in a great while. All CD players that I am aware of have these rubber gromets that can wear out. After 8 years of service from my $1000 hu and changer, I'm willing to pay $200 to get new parts if needed. I've had good luck with Alpine. I'd stay away from Sony, too.

Just changing the head unit and shutting down the factory amp is going to make a big difference in sound!

93 X sound system

Alpine head units are really clear, and that's all I've used for the last 4 years. I haven't had any problems with the grommets and I just bout the 9835 model.. all the other Alpine HUs that I have are now in my families cars and they love it.
Amp - I've now got the JL Audio 500/1 and it is awesome. I've always used Kicker amps, but when these came out I had to try it... well worth the money
Subs- I went overboard and bought 2 of the 2004 Kicker 12L7 solobarics and put them in a SubZone box... you can barely sit in my X now with it turned up, but it's really clear... if you open up the back window going down the road the people behind you will just shake their head
Door Speakers... well I ran out of money and settled for the Kicker 5x7 running off the Alpine HU.. it actually sounds clear and the subs don't drown them out.. so for $80 it wasnt that bad a choice

-8"s sound fine when installed correctly
-moreover, you can install a 15" to hit 60hz and no lower, or you can make a good 10" hit as hard as can be at 20hz, meaning you can make the box suit your listening....
-you need more than solder/gun, breadboard and a beginner book to make a amp and a sub!
-The mtx thunderform w/ 4000 sub sucks in my opinion....

I know you'd need more than a breadboard and book to make an amp. I was busting his balls over another thread. Actually there isn't much to an amp and speakers. We made them both in high school. Nothing you'd want to bump though
