So i finally got my kicker comp VRs goin, they are sick...but my front door speakers distort when i turn them up too loud, even with my gain set right and stuff. What are good door speakers for a decent price?

first you could turn the bass all the way down on the door speakers and only run it throught the subs, door speakers are not made for bass, so keep it low. i have a 2 pair of pioneer 5x7s in my 1st gen, they sound great, if you want to bump it up a little bit get some infinitys, dont buy the cheep kind that people sell. I work at circuit city as a installer for mobile audio and we sell these brands called esa and verge dont buy them they are crap but pioneer, alpine, infinity are all good. I would not recommend sony in the mobile audio department. People could argue with me all day that sony is good but really it is crap in cars. Sony kicks butt in any other department. but your looking at about 70 bucks a pair of pioneer or alpine and a little more for infinity. hope this will help you.

So what size speakers are in the doors right now 6x8s? I coulda sworn people were putting 5.25s in there?

Pioneers are very nice. I haven't used them myself, but my friends replaced all his speakers with the Pioneers and they sound extremely good.

I put 6 1/2 and tweets in my wife's explorer and mounted them to an adaptor plate since the stock hole is 6x8. And YES, TURN YOUR BASS EQ CONTROL DOWN SOME!!! And YES, PUT SOME SORT OF CROSSOVER ON YOUR MIDS AND HIGHS!!!!!!!! They aren't really meant to play bass and WILL distort when you crank them up like that with the bass frequencies playing through them. You'll notice a big difference just with stock speakers and a pair of cheap passive crossovers (in this case, $5 capacitors) on them. Go to a stereo shop and have them install some. Install shouldn't be more than $25 or $35...

so find whatever 6 1/2 components and tweeters i like that come with crossovers and have them installed, right?

Right and Wrong. Headunits these days are building extra features like a crossover directly into them. However, you are wrong about eternal amps having passive crossovers in them. They have "active" crossovers in them. They are powered crossovers that are cutting out certain frequencies BEFORE amplification. passive crossovers usually have no power applied to them and cut out certain frequencies AFTER amplification.

Yes, you CAN find any set of speakers that is the same size or smaller than the 6x8 opening on the explorer and have them installed directly or with the use of a mounting plate/adaptor. However, the crossover that comes with most mid/tweet kits crosses the bass and mid freq out of the tweets and the tweet freq out of the mid. But they usually don't cross out the bass freq from the mid.

That's why I suggested getting the extra passive crossovers. If the speakers are 4 ohm, if I remember correctly, a simple 99 to 199 farad cap should do the trick. Run it inline with one of the speaker wires. It will cut out the bass.

Go to partsexpress.com to check out some caps you can order and google the words passive crossover design for more info.

Oh, and if you ever want to put an external amp on your door speakers, get one that has a crossover built in as suggested above and set it to cut out everything below, depending on the speaker, about 100hz or 150hz...

ok well im a bit new to car audio, i mean i know a thing or 2 but this is a bit advanced for me, it would be really great if someone could just like give me an example of something that would work. ie a link to a set of door speakers and a link to the cap or crossover to use with it.
