My wife's 96 V-6 has 53K miles. Replaced the fuel and air filter at about 31K. Other than spark plugs and wires, anything else need to be replaced for a tune-up? I'll probably do the air filter again but hold off on the fuel filter until about 60K. My Chrysler dealer always wants to clean the throttle body but I've seen an Explorer shop manual and it says not to do this. It's running fine, btw.

I did a good tune up on my Sport around 82,000 miles. I changed the plugs, wires, air filter, fan belt, and flushed the cooling system. I figured since I was getting the valve cover gaskets changed, I might as well do everything else.

Give some thought to using high performance wires, such as Magnacore, to help performance and mileage.

I would definately flush the cooling system and replace with new coolant.

Good luck....

You should flush the tranny too. Don't just drop the pan, take it to a store where they offer flushes. Dropping the pan only drains about 30% of the fuild.

Not to argue but if you have only 53K or so and have not done serious wheeling you would be OK with changing the trans. filter and the 4 or so qts. of fluid.
Just be sure to do it once a year and you will be in far better shape than 90% of the people out there. If you are going to do it yourself I would strongly recomend getting a drain plug for the trans. pan. It makes the job SO much less of a mess the next time.

The tranny fluid and coolant was changed at 31K. I was wondering about engine stuff beyond the obvious plugs & wires.

What about the transfer case? The manual recommends changing that fluid at 30K also but my dealer didn't do it when they changed the tranny fluid.
