Ive got a 5r55e that the torque converter is going out in. Just wondering what else should be done while I'm at it? Already plan on replacing front main seal on transmission. Should the clutch solenoid be replaced at the same time?

also have a new filter kit to go in too.

I thought the main transmssion seal was reusable? Metal and tough...

Wasn't sure of materials used. Just figured I would plan on replacing it. If that's the case then it'll be left alone.

Would it be safe to assume that a new converter would come with a new pump bushing? Or should I order that as well?

I haven't been able to check alldata yet, but does the 5r55e require any special tools like torque converter alignment tool or any of the likes?

I'm only familiar with clutches and a couple of automatic transverse imports... LOL I know enough to get the job done right, but am trying to make sure I can do it right on a day and a half weekend. Hoping for no surprises! I'm currently searching the forums and reading up on these. Thanks!

The front seal is a good seal, I dont see many problems with it I would leave it alone. Not sure about reusable if its removed I would not reuse it, it will be damaged if its removed.

The converter will not come with a new bushing, the bushing will need to be replaced if its worn. Check the hub (the part that the bushing and seal ride on) for wear, it should be smooth and flat. If you have to replace the bushing the pump will have to come out and be completely disassembled. The bushing will have to be installed with a bushing driver and then the pump will have to be aligned with a pump tool before it can be re installed back on the transmission.

I would just replace the converter, change the fluid and filter. The pan gasket may be reusable if its metal or hard plastic. Do not use a cork gasket or sealant on any gasket.

When I put my 4r55e trans in only special tool needed was trans jack and a half inch warble socket. Usually the TC stats put.

Thanks guys!

I just checked my fluid today, and got a very bad surprise. It's grey and has a ton of metal particles in it. I'm wondering if a flush and filter is going to be good, or if I'm needing to think about more in depth work. I know the explorer autos have a poor reputation, but I'm not sure of what the common issues are. I would hate to spend the money on the converter and flush etc. Just to have it puke on me a few months down the road.

New question: flush, filter, torque converter, bushing? Or just rebuild the whole thing? LOL

If it doesnt have the symptoms yet, don't rebuild. Though metal particles mean the clutches are shredding. Might need a rebuild if you want it to go another 100k +
