does it have planetary gears, viscous or something entirely different??
and do they split more power to the rear than the front?

I am almost sure the system is viscous, and has a 65rear35 front split.
I have had absolutely zero problem with mine.
 












You can if your tires are dramatically different in size, front to rear. The difference in the rotating speeds can cause problems. I personally haven't seen any AWD explorers with problems due to that. Not saying they don't exist, I just don't know of any. Dodge has had lots of trouble with their AWD vans and mismatched tires.

yup, Chrysler has. The units would get too hot and then fail. Thats why they discountinued it.
