I have a 98 AWD and the abs light is staying on, it happened after a hill climb in the sand that I didnt make it all the way up, the truck just didnt have enough traction. But now the abs light is stuck on..where can I go to have it checked out..or what can I do myself to check it?

help...bump

Mine came on last week too. I haven't gotten around to checkin it out yet. But I'd look into the front two sensors, make sure they're there and clean.

yes clean all the dirt and crud out of the sensor discs on the back of the rotors. these should have a bunch of holes in it that pass in front of the sensor. The ABS systems in the 2nd gens uses 3 sensors. 1 at each front wheel and one at the rear diff.

If the front ones are clean then try replacing the one in the diff. That is what cleared the light on my wifes X.

Mine was because I was running low on brake fluid

You can always pull the battery cable to clear the codes and see if the light comes back on. Granted, you wont be able to get the code pulled by a mechanic if you reset it.

Mine came on after I went through a lot of water.
When I was installing my add a leafs a while ago, I jiggled the ABS sensor on the rear diff and the light went away.

ABS light

Most common ABS mechanical problem that cause light to come on is sensor failure. It shuts down your ABS, but regular brakes still work as designed. Good news, this failure is cheap and easy to fix. My mechanic diagnosed and installed a new one on my 99 for $65.00.
Of course, check your fluid level first.

are you sure your ABS light (yellow in color)was on, and not your BRAKE!! light(red in color) this it the same light that comes on when put your parking brake.

Another reason the ABS light can come on is dirty brake fluid/moisture/air in the fluid.
