what would be requirered to swap pushrods for SOHC?

'92 XLT
I just took delivery of my 92 XL. it has 150K on the clock. So I was thinking of buying the stuff needed to build a new high performance motor a little at a time.
I have decided I want to start with the best motor posible, ie the newest model that will fit.
If I can throw in a motor from an 04 that would rock. I just want to have as much of a head start when i begin.
So, from what year do I buy a "rebuildable" bottom end, top end, intake, yadda yadda yadda.
I would like it better if I didn't have to change the computer, but I come from import racing and stand alones aren't foreign to me.
So there you have it, what will fit the best and make the most power combo. Oh yeah, I want it to be reliable power. I don't want to be under the thing like it's a Chevy.

If you go over to a SOHC you will have to swap out everything. Motor and transmission, as well as the computer and wiring harness. If you want to make more power you're better off with a 302.

It isn't that way with the RX7.
I don't want a V8. I think the 4.0 is a good compromise of power and fuel economy.
 






Every vehicle is different. You'd have to talk to other people who have swapped v8s into first gens but im willing to get they get comperable gas mileage to the 4.0. A 302 is a much better motor to build if you want something "high performance." There are more parts available for the 302 and they're alot cheaper.
 






Yikes! What is the reference to the rotory Rx-7 doing in here?

A built 5.0L will not get the same mileage or close to a ohv 4.0L.
The OHV 4.0L can make some pretty good torque!

The SOHC 4.0L conversion is not worth it, as said before. Yes it can be done, in fact we are getting ready to do one :)
However for the average joe the SOHC is as much work and $$$ as the 5.0L, so you mine as well go that route.

The title of your thread implies that you want to build your 4.0L slowly to end up with a SOHC 4.0L, impossible. The OHV and SOHC are two different animals.

I have found the OHV to be reliable as they come, powerful enough for my use, and one workhorse of a beast of a engine.......plus I get approx 20+ MPG on the highway with 35" tires :)
 






thanks 410. that is enough to get me to stay wil the OHV.
I can port and polich the OHV and get a mild cam. that will pacify me and keep me reliable.
And might I say 410, wow on your BII. You have put some work into that thing.
I have another question for you though. The OHC exaust manifold looks like it will flow better than mine. will it? will it bolt up to my heads?
