I have a 93 Eddie Bauer, auto tranny.

I find if I set my cruise to 100-120 my Xplorer surges to stay at the speed.

What I mean is that, instead of a smoothsteady speed its like the thing is giving the throttle small, small shots of gas. its minor but i notice and i find it very annoying. but i'm also very meticulous over my vehicles :)

any ideas? she has 163 k kilometers on the odometer (about 98k miles??)

Thanks guys,

Leo

Could be a vacuum leak in the cruise control module. Had that happen with my old Monte Carlo. The diaphragm that held vacuum to hold a constant speed had a pin hole in it. Caused the cruise to surge.

awesome, thanks for the help.

think you could point me to where this cruise control module/unit is located under the hood?

thanks :)

on my '92, it's on the drivers side mounted on the wheel well in front of the brake master cylinder. it will have a vacuum hose running to the vacuum tree and a cable running to the throttle body parallel to the main throttle cable.

My cruise control surges because of my speedometer being jumpy. If you've ever noticed it jumping around that could be it. I tried greasing mine but it didn't help. So I just live with a bouncy speedo, and no cruise control.

Mine was doing the exact same thing a couple weeks ago, right after I washed the engine. I posted here, and someone said to check the vaccum line or something, but the next time I got in it and drove it, it worked fine. I think maybe I got something wet...Who knows....

Does it surge whether it's in 3rd or 4th? I have a coworker who's 96 started doing the same thing and it got progressively worse. Turned out that was the first sign that his tranny was slipping and he ended up with a rebuild. I hope the CC fix is all you need.

well once i get the A/C straightened away I'll get it looked at.

My speedo sometimes is bouncey yes but, i can be on a perfectly flat and smooth stretch of road and she still does it.

i know my warranty covers powertrain....but i aint taking it to the crooks that are called ford here to replace it (third party warranty)

We use a 93 Ranger with the 4.0 OHV in it for a parts truck at the ford dealership. It was doing the same thing. Set the cruise and you get a constant vroom, vroom, vroom.... and on and on. After replacing the IAC, the problem had gone away. Ranger had about 102,000 miles on it when the problem started.

:redexp: Ditto on what 5.0Dad said - my 96' started surging at highway speed (65-75) about a month ago (109,000 miles). The CIL and O/D On/Off lights were both acting wacky. And a tranny solenoid code was showing on the 'puter. Turns out the OD ring was worn out. It's in the shop right now having the tranny rebuilt. :fire:.

Check it out closely!
