Just a quick question I know anything form the ranger and explorer form 1991-1994 will work. I have also been told the 93-94 motors where a bit better then the 91-92 motors. Shouldn't the 4.0 out of the second gen explorer work also. Seem like all you would half to do is swap motor mounts out, intake, alt, small items like that. It seem like i used one form a 96 or 98 before in a 94 explorer but that has been a few years ago.

Any 4.0 OHV will drop right in. The problem lies in having to save and re-attach all the auxiliary stuff off of your engine. Over the years (after your 1992) things like a cam sensor, EGR system, 2nd O2 sensor and more crap was added onto the engine.

Basically, whatever engine you put in, will be a long block. You'll want to swap over your upper intake manifold, exhaust manifolds and maybe other things. Aside from that, most any 4.0L OHV should work.

Also I think that the 91 and 92, and possibly the 93 ex's were "batch-fire" and the 94-up were sequential. As long as you swap all the "stuff" over though, I don't think it would be an issue. Good luck with it!

The newer injectors will work on the batch fire system, they might even be an upgrade. Anything else electronic you can't bring over.

Thanks every one for the input so far started the tire down today before going to work. Is there a place here for a work log? I've looked around on the forums really have saw a place for it.

Something to take note about when performing an engine swap with the Ford 4.0L OHV. Each Model and engine pertaining to the year has it's own "calibration", (see sticker under hood or in door jamb), this calibration include fuel trims and ignition timing curves, among other variables. If you install an engine with cylinders heads of different year and combustion chamber size and shape, along with piston dish volume, and compression ratio, this changes the fueling and ignition timing curves for optimum performance a.k.a. "calibration", if the calibration does not match or is not optimized for a particular engine, poor performance, poor fuel economy, and engine damage can result.

I just went thru this, having had the heads on my 94 JUST replaced like 50 miles ago. Being the owner of a very clean 94 XLT that I wish to keep..but a misfire at the cold start..which did clear up within a minute but I was using a small amount of antifreeze. I had 214k on the engine.

I looked...searched for a drop-in 4.0. I forgot about something. Pre 94 odometers have 5 digits. The 94 has 6. I thought I was buying a 77k drop in 4.0. Once my 4.0 was out then we saw the cracks between the seats....I hauled down the alleged 77k motor for inspection. The heads off, what a mess. Clearly, this engine has far beyond 77k, maybe 177k could even be 277k. The heads were cracked.

The shop that does my engines (machine shop) said all four heads were junk. AND most high mileage 4.0 OHV are junk, the seats are soft, they form cracks that cannot be repaired. If you put in a hardened seat you run a very high risk of the crack growing, then popping the seat out. Catastrophy. Look at the top of the head. Is the valves even all the way across? Or does the exhaust valves sit higher than the intakes? That indicates the seats are pounded out on the OEM.

So off I went to buy new heads.

I bought mine off Ebay from a seller with 10,000 to 11,000+ positives and 9 negs. West Virginia. They are now installed and so far (40-50 miles) I am happy. They are Chinese NEW. There are some bad Chinese heads. There are good heads. I bought these, with the Square Trade warranty that was cheap.
