Hey guys, can some1 tell me,
what is faster? A Auto 4.0L OHV or a manual 4.0L OHV, in say 0 to 60mph or a 1/4 mile?

Thanks

I would say it somewhat depends on the driver but under normal circumstances a manual should be faster.

4r70w with a j-mod or baunmann recal is a boss transmission... i'd take that over a 5spd.

He's talking about the ohv v6, not the 302. With a good driver the manual would probably be a hair faster. That being said most of the newer auto transmissions in sports/muscle cars are faster than their manual counterparts.

Alright, so its a tad faster if its proper shifting and its more fun :)

I was more adressing jpacetti, not the OP. I should have Quoted him, my fault.

And by most, you're not including the craptastic 5r55s that's in the mustangs, cuz those are garbage.

Guys, here is another question,
is there a way to disable the 4wd? its either on Auto, High or Low. in auto the front wheels kick in after the back ones start slippin. How can i take that off, so the front ones never kick in?

Thanks

Ha! thanks. looks easier than I though
i might actually do it, so i can burnout at least once with my explorer lol
I can believe that these fords dont have a truly 2WD mode? How dumb is that?

It was a change after a certain year, some of them do have 2wd mode. Obviously it's not a mechanical limitation if you can do the BWM and get 2wd.

Just dont do to many burnouts or else you will kill you transfer case.

Manuals should also be faster because they have much less peristaltic losses.

manual of course, (I love my 5 speed!) an auto trans takes 10 to 15% of the engines power just to run it. I've also driven both types of Explorers.

The first gear ratio on an auto trans is usually the same as second on a manual trans, so the auto seems like it starts out in "second gear", making the manual accelerate faster

I heard that by cutting the brown wire in the x-fer case and installing a switch you get a choice between all wheel drive or 4x2 which improves performance and fuel econ by reducing drag.

Its not an awd system on the v6 models. It is awd for v8s though. For the v6 the 4wd only kicks in when the tires begin to loose traction. So it will not improve gas milage or performace. I have down the bwm to my truck and its a great way to select part time 4wd and full time 2wd.

A 5.0 4R70W 4x2 limited slip is real fast.

They're both OHV's. They're both deathly slow. ;)

O.k. so I have to ask are you drag racing your explorer?

My girfriends 4.0 ohv is pulling like low 30's in the quarter. There should be a drag racing section here.
