driving on surface streets, the truck is fine. it's got a decent bit of power and all, but struggles going up hills. on the highway, it's a nightmare. as long as the road is flat, i MIGHT be able to get up to 60 or so. i was coming home tonight and there was a long incline. the damn thing got down to about 30mph with my foot damn near to the floor. i had a similar problem once before, and it turned out to be a clogged air filter. now i know this isn't the case as i just put a new one in after this last off roading trip... last weekend. what else should i check?

bang around on your catalytic converter that thing gets clogged up you go no where. Magnaflow makes a good replacement for most trucks.

it's funny though... right before i was going to do the lift, i drove 20 miles on the highway coming home from work. it drove perfectly. as i'm getting closer to home, i notice that my battery light is on and my amps are low. i pulled into an auto parts store and had them check the alternator. turns out it was bad. while there and testing that, i saw coolant falling out of the truck. we took a peek and saw that the water pump was shot. i bought a new alternator and a new water pump. i installed them at the same time as the lift. it just started doing this on the way home from my father in laws house tonight (that's where we did the lift). nothing else was touched. it was a simple swap of the alternator and water pump. i just don't get it. i'll check the exhaust, but i just don't think that's it. could it be a ground issue or something goofy like that?

lol. yeah, i might mention that this on the explorer, not the ranger.:D

When is the last time you checked your fuel filter?

I replaced that when i bought the truck last october.

Having the same issue on my 01 EX. 4wd auto. Flat ground and I'm doing fine well over 60 but gradual inclines are terrible! Pedal to the floor and the engine never goes past 2500 rpms. Transmission never kicks down. If I let off the gas and then hit it, it kicks up a bit but never really gets going. The pedal down keeps the speed constant but I have zero pick-up. Just did plugs and wires and a new air and fuel filter as well as new intake manifold gaskets, a throttle body cleaning and new fuel cap (fuel cap light has come on a few times in the last few years so I just replaced it) as well as some techron injector cleaner.

Anybody have any leads?

Well, i had to put the truck on a flat bed tonight and tow it 22 miles to my house. i was on my out to paola, ks to help a buddy of mine get his range rover out of the mud. power went down to almost nothing. when i heard the knocking start, i shut it down. popped the hood to find oil everywhere. it was dark and too cold to try and figure it out on the side of the road. called sprint and had them send a tow truck. looks like i'll be doing the motor swap after all. gonna start tomorrow and hope i finish tomorrow too.

Hmmm I did get a weird thing when I started it up when it was cold the other day and the oil pressure gauge was buried low (check gauge light on) then bounced up and down once before settling into the normal position (check gauge light went off). Better check the level and look for leaks and see about an oil change....

Wondering what failed on yours Turbo to cause the oil extravaganza under the hood....

Mine turns out to be a catalytic converter issue - to the tune of about 1K :(
