What's really going on here?

I bought my Ford Explorer about 2 years ago, and shortly after I had bought it it started to only go in reverse once. Dont' ask me how or why. It will only go in reverse once, but once I put it in drive and drive around, SOMETIMES it will go into ger again. Recently, I put it into reverse of a second time (trying to parallel park, ) and it wouldn't go. So, I sat. Throttled her up, and after about 20 seconds, she will slowly sllliiiiidddeee into gear, without ever "clicking" into reverse. When this happens, the car also vibrates quite a bit. So, now she will go into reverse more then once, but on the second or third attempt, I will put the car into reverse, and it will just stay put until it slides into reverse and shakes. Any answers? I've asked quite a few people. I don't have problems with any other gear. Just reverse, and when I first put it into reverse, it's fine! No shaking, clicks right in, everything is perfect.

Megan, I'm not a transmission expert, but there are many on this site that should be able to help you, so just hang in there and someone should have some answers.
Sounds to me like your reverse gear is AFU....
By the time you turn in tonight you should have some good responses here...

On a 91 it is likely the low/reverse servo O ring with a bad leak. That is easy to do and would be a start. A good couple hour project you can do and under $50 with filter and fluid change. There is also a spool in the valve body that can stick. Sleeving that is a little more advanced.

i agree sounds like a servo leak or a sticking valve in the valve body i would try to get this fixed before you do major damage
