so on some recent adventures i had, i was parading through some muddy water and i had recently changed my air filter and forgot to reinstall the vent hose that is connected to the valve cover and the ish got deep truck started to bog down a little and run funny so i drove the the convenient store popped the hood and noticed the hose was off. i then opened the air filter box and pulled the filter out and of course it obviously fell apart when removed due to all the mud and water the air filter box was full of muddy water.

now two weeks later i was driving to work and noticed my truck was ticking. after a couple of days observing the tick i found that it sounds like it is under the valve cover passenger side and it only does it after the truck warms up to normal running engine temp so what im asking is any ideas to what this might be i will be moving in like 3 weeks so my stuff is all packed i will have to wait till after the move to possibly do some checks how ever i could possibly go the the auto skills shop to check it out idk any input to the issue would be greatly appreciated. thanks in advance!! :salute:

the pic is after the mud hole i figured i would do a lil hill climbing lol

Check your oil when you get the chance, perhaps something got pulled in the line while you were playing. As for the sound, sounds as if its your lifters.

I'll check that soon as i get off work today and i guess i will also check on pulling the codes for the check engine light that came on this morning thanks for the input :salute:

umm this sounds more like major problems.if your oil is clean, witch is less chance you sucked water into the small hose as in through the intake.to me sounds like bent valves, lucky you didnt hydrolock it

Update!!!!

ya so that wasnt the check engine light i had pulled my dash panel to install a radio it was the oil light. so today i checked the oil and no water good stuff right there ( changed the oil) but now immediately after i changed the oil got every thing back together started it back up and omg an un godly amount of smoke is pooring out of the exhaust i can only assume its the piston rings for the fact that my coolant level hasn't changed in over flow or the radiator. another problem i had during the oil change is I RAN IN THE HOUSE TO GET A DRINK WHILE THE OIL WAS DRAINING AND FOUND MY 4 YR OLD IN THE THE TRUCK CRANKING THE ENGINE. im going to want to say thats what caused it but all i can do now is fix it any ideas to what might have happened during the cranking and can you please tell me its going to be an easy fix (lol i threw that in for the humor)

He didn't start it. he just cranked it a couple of times. the smoke is to me grey but my wife says white. i have never had to add coolant and it has never leaked. over flow and radiator are still full, on the ground by my exhaust is a carbon ring and all around the exhaust tip is black. by chance its the piston rings could they be done through the the bottom of the engine?

Nope nor can you pull the pan off with motor in truck

so in other words i might as well just do a complete rebuild. my only issue with that is the timing tools ugh. my wife has a 2002 i just did the head gaskets on and it ended up costing me 1200 cause im not too proficiant at the time so i payed someone to pull the motor and do it for me if i would of known that i would of just paid for them to do he head gaskets as well but seeing that this is my car i will just probably go buy a cherry picker and the tools and give her a whirl mean while i have a buddy thats going to loan me a compression tester so i can atleast make sure thats what the problem is.

I would say its bent valves and or cracked the head

so i have great news... im moving to ft gordon in less than a month and in augusta they have a pull a part that has like 20 explorers by chance they have a full engine its only going to cost me 126 plus the extras so thats not too bad but seeing that when tax time rolls around this isnt going to be my daily driver any more im thinking about weather or not i want to just do the 5.0 swap but before hand im trying to find any threads related to it im just curious to what the build up would be like so if any one knows what direction to point me in to i would appreciate it maybe something with pics

regardless of the fact im going to do an engine swap i still want to diagnose my issue i did a little bit today i pulled a few spark plugs to see what they looked like and i also pulled off the air intake tube so i could get a better look at things and this is what i found;

Spark plugs looked normal except the ends were brown and there were traces of carbon all over them.

my main concern was the oil build up on my throttle plate. when i first got the truck i cleaned the throttle body and plate so i know it wasnt there before also while cleaning that off again i opened it up and ran my finger around in it and found alot of fresh oil around the edges close to where the plate opens and closes.
I also started the truck with the air duck off and noticed that there was smoke coming from the tube that connects to the top of the valve cover by the oil fill is that normal for it to smoke? it was almost like some one smoking a cigarette and blowing the smoke through a straw.

I just want to say i appreciate every ones willingness to help i would be lost with out this site. now back to the problem at hand im not to sure of the results but i did my first compression test today unknowingly tore the truck apart before warming it up not sure of what difference it will make but here are the readings i got from the test.

cyl1-155
cyl2-150
cyl3-120
cyl4-125
cyl5-150
cyl6-115
there wasnt any hesitation in the readings

The 115, 120 and 125 are low. Iirc when i did this earlier this summer, you should be seeing compression within 10% of each other per head.

My truck with 165k miles had 150s on the right head, but the left ranged in the 110s. Lots of carbon and water out the tail pipe but no smoke.

Head was cracked between intake and exhaust on all three cylinders, but biggest problem was intake valve seats were completely gone as valves were recessed about 1/2".

Seeing smoke out of that tube is not normal, least i dont get that. Did see lots of oil up thru throttle plate though and i can only speculate that this was a result of the recessed valves since the worst ones had the most oil.

Vry easy job, this truck is

Ha ha 2 months later sorry I just seen this post im going to say you are probably right on that but I think that it was the valve seals but regardless I already did an engine swap but now once I get this thing tip top I'm going to focus on rebuilding that engine thanks that will give me something to look at when I get there
