Whats the difference....

between the 4.0 in my 91 and the 4.0 in newer trucks, like 98s and above.

The reason is I have a blown head gasket and I need to pull a swap. The V8 swap is too expensive right now and i can have my hands on a 4.0 from a newer X (wreck).

It will not swap...the older 4.0L are an OHV design and the newer ones are of an SOHC design. Completely different

jim, i dont think all the new ones are sohc's, are they? i thought you could still get the ohv up to 99 or 2000, but i could be wrong.

either way, the head gaskets are different on the 2 different motors.

they offered ohvs untill 99 i think. either 99 or 00.
i think you could find like a 98 ohv and it would work. they are set up pretty much the saame

I am gonna swap the whole motor, not just the heads. I have over 200K on this motor.

I am wondering if the swap will bolt right in, or if there will be modifications needed.

The OHV engine was offered thru 2001 model. The engine should fit in the 91, but you may have problems with the tranny cause the newer ones are electronic. Might have to swap computers or something of that nature...... I've never done it, so I may be wrong.

Thanks guys, When I pull the swap I will swap out the motor and Tranny since the newer model will hav less miles, plus I lost the OD in my tranny a while back.

I looked into the OHV to SOHC swap myself. You will have to do more than 'bolt it in'. You need a new computer, new wiring harnes, new sensors, etc. You will have to do a lot of work to make this happen...the 302 swap is easier (from what I am told).

Personally, I decided to just rebuild my OHV with Vanir parts.
