Whats wrong with my X??

Got a 93 explorer, was runnin around all day yesterday, and it was fine, no problem, untill I started it up for my last trip to come home. When I hit the gas, it was like it didnt wanna go, and sputtered a bit before it got to accelerate above 20mph. After around 20mph, you dont really notice anything, until you come to a stop, then go again. yesterday when I first noticed this, I didnt bother to turn the radio down, to try and hear any noises, but today I did, and you can hear a constant puttering sounds, kinda like a diesel engine, but not nearly as growling. Also, left it running and got out to see if I could figure anything out under the hood. Well, nothing there, but the exhaust was puttin like hell, like it was coughing, or as I said before, like a diesel motor.
I'm going on a trip next month to virginia from PA, and I sure hope this isnt something serious or expensive.
Any thoughts?

Dude, could be a lot of things. I'd first check the ignition system.... plugs, wires, etc.

I would go with the wires. Most people forget to change them. when wires go the engine starts to misfire. As for cost you can get 6 plugs for $10 and wires for my truck wer $35.
But be warned, it will take you forever to change the plugs at the rear.

OK, day 3:
I was backing into a paralell parking space today and when I put it in reverse, it stalled out on me 3 times, just backing it in. After that, it didnt still again though.
Still look like a plugs, wires problem??
