I've searched through a lot of threads and most of us are using 15 or 16 inch wheels. What's wrong with going bigger? I want to get some 265/60/17's for my stock height '92 XL and mount them on some 17x8's. I use my X only on paved streets, gravel and dirt roads. Besides the fact that I have to lie to the guy at the tire store to get them mounted, is there something wrong with this setup?

I also have a question about offset (a topic I don't really understand.) What offset would I need on those 17x8's?

17s are a great way to go. Once I get my lift I was thinking about going with the Cobra Rs like TrckMagik has on his ride.

The thing is, most people stick with 15/16 because tires are cheeeap. Or they go extreme with 18+s.

Les Schwab mounted my 255/60/17's on bullitts with no questions asked. Give them a try.

17's are nice, better ride than my 18's are now ... But then again, these tires have stiffer sidewalls.

And most offroaders below 35s go with 15s or 16s for cheaper tires and more sidewall flex and rim protection. 17s are gaining in the offroad market, but who wants to fubar a nice 17" rim on rocks?

Nothing wrong with 17s. I have 33 on 17 for the street and day trip off-roading, but swap to the 33 on 15 Muds for the trails that might cause serious damage.

15s or 16s for the real show

Thanks Jeff! :D They are one-piece forged Centerline Stingray IIIs. I wanted a good looking rim that would still handle the abuse off-road.

BFG makes a metric AT tire that turns out to be in the 34" range.

I want this setup because the bigger wheel will mean not as big an increase in tire weight and will help gas mileage and power.

WTF? Why do they make the 315s in ATs and not MTs? That would be a sweet setup though... some Cobra Rs and ATs.
