I was looking to upgrade my 99 xlt with 17" rims from a newer explorer but was told the offset was different. Apparently the offset is greater on the older models (95-01) than it is since 2002. Is there a way to make newer oem wheels fit the older models? What would happen if the where to go on without any modifications? Thanks

Not really sure what you are asking. What do you mean greater (a positive number)? On my 2000 X, the stock wheels are at 0. A positive number will bring the wheel in more, a negative number will bring the wheel out more. Me personnelly would not get a wheel with a positive number, (at 0, to me is pushing it) why go further in. Right now I have a -12 offset and they stick out a little bit, to me better balance and handleing/stability. Also, they look alot better than stock.

I do understand the offset issues between the wheels. Is 30mm difference in offset going to be that noticable. I wondering if there would be any clearance issues with brake calipers or tire rub, etc. Is that the only reason why interchanging is not more common. Would there be any other modifications needed besides possibly spacers. Thanks UtahX for the quick response
