I need something that turns my headlights on when its near dark or dark. I seem to forget to turn them on after leaving a brightly lit parking lot. I ended up doing it tonight but i had the parking lights on so i thought nothing of it. When I got home I noticed that i didnt have them on and said to myself things I can't put here! So is there something that can turn them on automatically? Is there such a thing?

yup. but im not sure how to do it. i know the eddie bauers and limiteds had auto lights (the sensor was in the rear view mirror). I'm sure it could be hooked up somewhat easily. I have the auto lights but never use them, i dont like them. with the auto lights on, there is no way to flash my lights on and off at another car if I need to, they just stay on reguardless of what position the headlight switch is in. when ever I drive, I ALWAYS turn my lights on. so i am in the habit of turning them on and off, i dont even think about turning them on anymore, i just do it.

My Mountaineer has the auto on lights but 6 years ago they would come on in bright day light and not turn off. I pulled the fuse and never looked back. It just shows how lazy America has become.

I like the concept, but I mean cmon... I saw a commercial awhile back.. some car has automatic windshield wipers now... sense's water... wtf... it's pretty easy to realize it's dark enough to need your headlights on... and even if it's not... think of it like this.. it's easier to see other vehicles when their lights are on.. goes the same for you. I wouldn't wanna hear about how you got into an accident because some car didn't see you.

LOL. my moms Volvo has that. Its actually a really cool feature. You can put the wipers on when its not raining and they wont turn on. You can manually overide it. But its cool because you turn a little wheel that makes the sensor more sensitive or less sensitive to the amount of water on the windshield. keep it at about half way and as soon as it starts to rain harder they automatically go faster, and when the rain stops so do the wipers. it makes it so you arent always messing with the intermittet switch, trying to find a good speed. I like them. not that I'm lazy to turn the wipers on, but because they slow down and speed up automatically and you dont ever have to touch the sweed switch.

ha. I took down my mirror and put a peice of black tape over the sensor so that they would be on all the time and I wouldnt have to worry about turning the lights on and off, at that time I was big on the auto lights. but then one night I had to flash my lights at someone and I couldnt do it, they wouldnt turn off. I would have to reach up to the mirror and move the little slider to do it. what a PITA to do that! so then I was just like screw it.

Adding auto lights is an extremelly easy process. All you need to do is got to Ebay and get a mirror with auto light feature (and make sure it has a decent amount of wiring harness available). To wire it in, there are plenty of instructions on this web site. I really like the auto lamp feature. I just wish they were tied into the wipers so when the wipers are on so are the lights. Newer Explorerers have this feature ('08 and up). This is a great add-on!! And no, it is not being lazy, but my newer '04 has the auto lamps, so I added it to my '96 as well. With the auto lamp mirror you will also gain the auto dim feature.!!

Haha.. I kinda wanna do this now.. I like that mirror... uhm.. is there an option to turn it off if you want or have it on auto mode? Or is it auto only?

yep....on the mirror, there is a little slider at the bottom to adjust the sensitivity. You slide it all the way to the left, and when it stops push it a little more and it will move over some and that is off position. it kinda clicks over there i guess you could say.

I mean the headlights.

But my normal headlight switch remains the same? It ignores the "off" position? Unless it's "off" on the mirror?

yes. thats what i was saying a couple posts above. with the auto lights in the on position, I cannot flash my lights, they will not turn off with the headlight switch unless the auto lights are turned off. But the headlight switch is the same, its the switch on the mirror itself that turns them on and off.

the auto lights overide the actual headlight switch.

I like mine. I have them on my EB and had them on my '00 Sport. However, they turn the lights on as soon as I turn the key which puts a bit of drain on the battery which my HIDs don't like (one side won't fire up all the time), even with a relay harness. So I'm going back to the "old fashioned" way. The "bong, bong, bong" sound is enough to remind me to turn my lights off before I close the door.

I have read many threads about problems with the setup so I guess I won't miss anything. My '97 Sport didn't have the feature and I got by just fine.

Hey, you're still here.

That's what I needed to know.. I'm used to turning them on/off. I guess I'll stick with my current setup. I don't need to stress out the HID's or have low voltage during a start.

You just slide the slider all the way to the left and autolamp turns off (when working correctly).

auto lamps rule. I have them in the 98 and 03. It sucks because sometimes when I drive the 93 i wont remember to turn on the lights.
