I have a 1992 Explorer. It gets decent gas milage , 18 mpg , and I'd like to keep it's MPG and relability. However I'd also like to modify it to go off roading and buni wamping here in Eastern Ohio.

It has a 4.0 V6, a trans from an AeroStar van, the body is rusting but savable and the interior is perfect. I do have a problem with the transfer case not wanting to engage even after rebuilding 3 times and changing the unit the last time.

What modifications should I be looking at to make it more off roadable and retain the reliability it gives me now ?

I'm currently building a square tubing roof rack and tubular bumpers for it. Do you recommend a roll bar as well ?

What's the scoop on tires and wheels ?

Can body panels be purchased for this model ?

Thx ,

Gonzo

Hate to say it man, if you want to modify it for rock crawling and off roading, your mileage won't stay the same. Most likely it'll go down, but with modifications to the engine/intake/exhaust you can turn some of this around. I'd also look into re-gearing if need be if you run bigger tires to keep the tranny/engine from straining. There's a bunch of information that everyone can use for mileage, whether you lower or lift. Good luck

For lifting, I can only tell you what what I hear, and that's:
Warrior Shackles for the rear
F-150 Coil seats and lifted coils for the front
or you can do a body lift

As for the roof rack, it'll end up decreasing your mileage a little because of more drag it'll give the Explorer.

As far as the body panels go, what parts do you need? You might be able to go to a junkyard and get them there, or if it's the rocker panels I know there's a place online you can buy them.

Here are som elinks to get you going.

Lifts and Max tire sizes

MAF to Throttle Body Intake Tube (cold air intake kinda)
