I am replacing the rear shocks this weekends. The truck is 13 years with the original shocks on it. Obviously the bolts are very rusted and I managed to get one off. And when I tried to get the other one off, I broken the bolts. It is a M12-1.75 grade 10.9 bolts at 85 mm long.

I went to O'Reilly and they don't have it. I went to Home Depot/Menards, they only carry bolts up to grade 8. I called ACE hardware store and they don't carry it. I am going to call other auto parts store in town tomorrow. If none of them carry it, I will have to go to the dealer and it may take days.

I wonder where your guys get such bolts?

You may try going to your local fastenal store to see what they have.

The stockers are flange head, but a standard hex should fit fine.

They usually don't carry much in the way of metrics, but can usually order them for you within a couple days. I don't believe they have a charge to order stuff in.

If you need a quick fix to get back on the road, I would try a 7/16" dia bolt. It will be a hair smaller than what you need, but it will get you back on the road. A 1/2" bolt will probably not fit as it is larger than a 12mm.

i got my bolts from true value if im not mistaken when i did my rear shocks.

Fastenal does have minimum qty order restrictions. When I got the longer upper intake bolts for the 1" spacer for my 5.0 I needed 4 bolts but they came in packs of 5 only.

Places like true value and ace are good options, or fastenal they have everything. 10.9 is actually about the same as a grade 8, it's just the European spec.

Is grade 8 really OK? I went to Home Depot today and they said that grade 8 is the strongest they carry. If it is OK I will get it tomorrow. I definetely need to drive it on Monday.

THank you all for the information.

Go for the grade 8 if thats all you can find. Techie was right on 10.9 being the metric equivalent. If you really HAVE to have 10.9 bolts, go to any full service John Deer dealership with a parts counter. They have a vast selection behind the counter.

Be sure to understand that the number stamped on the head of a metric bolt isnt the same as the US Standard grade. A metric bolt stamped with an 8.8 is roughly a Standard Grade 5 bolt, a metric 10.9 and up is roughly a grade 8 bolt. Too many people come into the fastner store that I work at and think that they can put on an 8.8 metric as a hardened bolt, again "IT IS NOT" a hardened bolt. Just so you have the information that some people dont want to tell you.

I got two M12 bolts stamped with 8.8. It is described in the store as 'Grade 8.8'. Based on what you described here, it is only 'grade 5'. I need the truck to work tomorrow. I will install the shock with these bolts and get 10.9 bolts ASAP. I only drive 6 miles to work and probably it is find to use grade 5 bolts in a few weeks?

Any comments on this?

I would replace the bolts with 10.9's just to keep things factory and to maintain stock strength. Will you see a failure from the 8.8's? Probably not anytime soon, or maybe even ever. I wouldn't lose sleep over it, but I would replace them for peace of mind in the long term.

or you can always go to your help section of your parts store and get the shock mount bolts..i think DORMAN makes them i had to buy 2 for the front and 2 for the back..there was nothin wrong with 3 of them but the 4th one i ended up bnreaking it off

dcdyd, they are correct by stating that they are 8.8, but as I said it is the metric strength and it converts to a grade 5 US. Go ahead and use them and get the 10.9's, I dont think we have any at my work right now, but if you cant seem to find them let me know I will see what I can round up at work for ya.

THanks for the information. I think that I can buy some 10.9 bolts online. I am using the metric 8.8 right now and as soon as I get 10.9 bolts I will replace those.

By the way, is it better to use anti-seize lub for these bolts? I learned that for certain bolts like lug nuts as well as caliber bolts it is not good idea to use ASL. How about these bolts for shocks?
