Where do you install a subwoofer?

I ordered a 2011 explorer, XLT spec 201a. My first question is: does this car come with a subwoofer of any kind?

Assuming it does not: Where could I put a subwoofer? The problem is with the power lifting back seats. You know, how they retract into the floor. I cant really look at the car right now, since I do not have it physically here. I was wondering if anyone had any knowledge about this. Thank you

It doesn't come with a subwoofer, and really doesn't need one unless you really like to pound the bass. I have the premium plus (8 speaker) system, and the sound quality is quite good. Well balanced and clear.

For the upgraded audio systems, the subwoofer is mounted on the RHS quarter trim panel where the storage cubby is on the base audio models. There is no other place on this truck to put a subwoofer and maintain use of the 3R seat system. Heck, there was no place other than under the driver seat to put the tire mobility kit for trailer tow models!

Draper, the premium audio system is actually 8 speakers according to Ford's website. The high-end Sony is 12 speakers. The standard system is 6 speakers with the base model and 200A XLT.

Oh ok, so the only place to put it would be the storage / cubby area. That is helpful. I just want to have at least some kind of subwoofer. I went for a year in my old car without any subwoofer, and I wasn't very happy with what my speakers could offer without one. I wonder how much room is in that storage area. I wonder where the amplifier should go. I just ordered the car and I am still playing the waiting game.
P.s.: I'm not one of those guys trying to wake up the whole neighborhood with a huge subwoofer. I just would like to add some nice deep sound to my car

Believe it or not the amp was actually mounted on the inside of the dash next to the radio. I will find it and post the factory service manual pic if I can.

Edit: Sorry I was wrong it is not located there, standby for pics for where the factory system is located.

Best bet (unless you ordered the Sony audio system) would be to live twith the existing and find a Sony subwoofer / trim panel in a year or so in a salvage yard to udgrade. Propably not too long there will be aftermarket subs to replace the cubby.

The amp for the Sony subwoofer is located above the wheel well under the quarter trim panel on right side.

Umm, if anyone can tell me how to upload an image from my computer and not from a URL than I will post them

IIRC, the cutaway Explorer at the NAIAS had both the subwoofer and an attached amp mounted on the RHS with the amp sitting above the wheel well

Thank you thank you for all the information. All of this information has now got me considering changing me order from XLT 201A, to a LIMITED 300A. What are your guy's thoughts on that? I know this is now a completely different subject, but I would love some input from you all. My current quote for XLT 201A (before any discounts or anything) is $34,800.00. What do you think they would offer me for a LIMITED 300A (no options)? Thank you guys

Or should I just go XLT 201A and try and continue to pursue the aftermarket sub install? It sounds like its going to be a very difficult installation

I just don't know if I would base a $40K decision based on a subwoofer.

Get waht you can afford and will make you happy.

I know for me, I got a limited, but had to fore go the HID lamps, as I did not need the other junk in the package - even though, I have really grown to like the HIDs in the Flex we currently own.

Yea I hear you. The bigger reason why I am thinking about doing the upgrade, is because I am now seeing the remote start, the speaker system, and a handful of other things that I really like. It seems that if I did just 1 or 2 of those things aftermarket, it will cost me almost the same amount as upgrading to the LIMITED.

I like those toys too. I went XLT, 202A. Adding a sub and a remote start can be done for way less than the difference.

I'd love a few of the "toys" on the limited. I'm not interested in them enough for the difference in price.

Do you guys know the specs on the Premium radio that comes with the 201A package? I just ordered a 2011 XLT Black, 20" polished wheels, tow pkg, roof rails, mud guards, power gate. Is the 201A premium radio just an additional 2 speakers (8 total) or is it more powerful too. A youtube video referenced the premium 201A radio as Sony. Is this true? What are the power specs, watts, etc?

Premium sound system is crap

the vocal setting in explorer xlt 2016 Premium audio is crap.
either you use android phone with bluetooth and 10 band graphics in it.or use extra sub woofer not for bass just to cut loundness of vocal.

anyother idea by u guys?

Are you asking about other ideas as to where to install a sub? There is a thread in the 'Modified' sub forum on audio upgrades that I believe has some info. Also, not sure if you noticed but the previous post to yours was a little over 5 years ago. Not a big deal, just an FYI.
