Welcome to this forum! It's a little hard to determine where that tube came off of. From what you've just described, it sounds like the rear overfill tube which is high up on the transmission. That's why you are having a hard time finding where it goes back. Glacier991 has a thread called the 4R70W rebuild diary which is a sticky in the transmission section of this website. It has many useful pictures.

Both the transmission and transfer case have a vent tube, so it could be either one. Some off roaders extend the tubes to get the opening as high as possible to guard against water getting in during stream crossings. I would check both to make sure they are in place.

The opening should be near the top of the case. I don't have the same trans/transfer case as you do, but I do have a manual that cover both at home. I will try to attach some drawings later this evening to show the locations.

It is the transfer case vent tube. The transmission vent tube is longer and attaches on the left side of the trans.
