Should be under the hood, under the wiper cowl.

Thanks for the quick reply. Do I have to remove anything to get to it? Hey do you know what they cost?
Thanks Again,
Mark

No. I found the PCM made sure all connections were good. Cleaned grounds.

what problem are you having?
the PCM is the drivetrains computer :)

I have a rough idle or more like a miss. I have cleaned and checked most know items, IAC.MAF, PVC new plugs wires, new TPS, cleaned CPS. I think I may have carbon build up on the valves. I bought the car from a women who worked close to home and put 40k on it. Any ideas???
Thanks,
Mark

Any check engine light?

No, I keep waiting. The says there are no codes in memory.

OKay well no CEL then usually means its not emissions related (not 02's, MAS, etc)
At leas the computer thinks everything is fine.

I really doubt it is carbon on the valves, because even with 140K miles this engine should run smooth as can be.

I assume you have reset the battery after each tune up, what about the fuel filter?
Does the 01 SOHC require the timing chain tensioner fix?

Is it only at idle or does it miss at all times?

Does it do it only cold or warm as well?

I guess back to basics here.
Check fuel pressure, check spark at all 6, check compression, check for vacuum leaks, etc.....check the spark plug wire routing (never know), I have heard of the SOHC skipping 1 tooth on the timing chain, but I would think you would suffer from more then a miss at idle.

these driveability issues can really be a PITA to find.

I have noticed on cold starts after the car sits for a few days when I first crank it it has that noisy chain like a diesel sound.
I told the dealer but they say they need to hear it. My thought was chain slop that at idle was a problem. I have replaced fuel filter but need to check fuel pressure. Can I do that on the fuel rail?

yes there is a shcrader valve on the fuel rail, pass side, under the intake plenum.

Chain like noise or is it valve clatter?
I would have the Ford dealer run your VIN and see if there are any recalls outstanding for the truck, I am guessing based on what you describe your SOHC needs the timing chain tensioner recall performed = OUCH.
There are I think 5 timing chains on the SOHC engine = engine must come out.

You can do a search on this site for the recall and read all day about it.

There haven't been any recalls for the SOHC, just lengthened warrantees. The tensioners(2) are cheap, and not terribly hard to change. The two cam cassettes are a big job, and a huge job. To do the rear requires removing the engine. If they haven't been done, then the should be at some point.

If the mileage is low(40k), then you might do just the front cassette, tensioners, and the check valve(comes with the front tensioner kit). The cam work requires special tools to do. Search around on the site for others who have done it. Good luck,
Don

What causes valve clatter?

The issue with the SOHC engines is the chains becoming loose from excessive wear of the plastic chain guides.

The 2002+ parts are supposed to last longer. The early cam cassettes evidently are prone to falling apart, wearing away. When the chains get too loose, the valves will hit the pistons, and destroy the engine. Don't let that happen, don't wait to fix it later. Good luck,
Don
