Any ideas where it is located, it's the Mach factory stereo, with the sub and 6 disc changer. Seems like the amp is dead and I'd like to replace it myself so my wife can listen to some music again in her X.

The amp for the 4 main speakers should be built into the HU, and the sub amp should be behind the plastic panel close to the sub itself. If you also have an external amp for the 4 corners, it will be back there also.

I thought the head units were dead heads? Well i at least thought that for my '96. As far as where the amps are. They are where Alec said in the far rear passenger side next to the sub.

98+ the head units had internal amps, dunno about the high-end Mach system though. All the subs 91-01+ have their own amps separate from the rest of the system.

Alec is right. '91-'97 Explorers had the what they called "distributed architechture" system, where the receiver is only a keyboard and a display. In '98, Ford finally put in the speakers amp in the head unit so on the Mach system, the only amp that isn't in the head unit is the subwoofer amp.

So aviator, the only thing you can do is either get a new aftermarket receiver or find one on Ebay specifically for the Mach system. Good luck!
